We can't melt it down in the UK then?
I suppose it's cheaper to ship it x,000 miles to India, let them melt it down and make it to something, then we buy it back, and India takes the profit. Yep, that sounds about right.
Depends on who buys it and where the demand is. I suppose it's cheaper to ship it x,000 miles to India, let them melt it down and make it to something, then we buy it back, and India takes the profit. Yep, that sounds about right.
Most ferrous metal recycling is done in the UK by Corus and aluminium recycling is done by Novelis. Last time I looked, around 40% of non-ferrous was exported.
Technically, there's no such thing as "scrap" metal. It's more accurate to consider it as a commodity as most of it is traded via the London Metal Exchange. Ideally, we need to be exporting more but at the moment, the market demand is weighted towards the domestic market.
Some good prices at the moment too! : http://www.letsrecycle.com/prices/metals/
