Distance vs Speed

Having just read the feature on SSC Ultimate just wondered from our maths experts what sort of distance you need to reach speeds of 275mph. I think top Ultima circa 245mph? I know this depends on acceleration and braking but does a fascility outside a salt flat exist to achieve these speeds in real world?

What about the Nardo proving track in Italy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nard%C3%B2_Ring
and a Volkswagen test track in ex East Germany too where the Bugatti Veyron was tested for top speed?

Im sure the James May run in the Bug he needed 5 miles of straight road to get to his top speed and stated that anyone owning a car would never experiance the top speed.

IMO the limiting factor will be tyres...and at 20k a set for the Bug and hat they only last 25 miles at the top speed...mmm I certain cant afford any...Not sure what Jeffs car uses
