Recommend Some Retro Hot Hatches

My commute is all B roads, 12 miles each way and about 1/2 hour.

I have a little bit of money available, and wish to buy something nippy, fun, lightweight, economical and reliable. The cheaper the better.

What have you got for me?

well my personal reccomendation would be a peugeot 205 gti, standard 1.9 or a nice engine converted mi16 like mine, super quick, great handling and cheap as chips!!

I ran a Renault 5GT Turbo for a year and then a 1.9 Peugeot for 2y after

No comparison for me

The Pug is probably the better all round car but the Renault was a whole lot more fun

Tricky to find a good 'un now though if not impossible due to them being owned by people like me

The Italians have some great retro hot hatches Alfa Sud and 33 Cloverleaf, and Fiat Strada Abarth and Tipo 16v!

I've always hankered after a Toyota Corolla GTi-16 Twin cam... Great engine - had it in the MR2.

12 miles on B roads in 30 minutes? What are you driving at the minute???????

A mint, stock/original 205 GTi or Golf GTi would be great.

Though any retro hatch in good condition and stock would be a bonus, far too many have been f**ked with.

Should tick the FUN box if you can find one in good shape. The golden period for these would be 1989 up to when they took the carb off! maybe '92-93

Ive had 2 they were both great but the '89 had better grip than the '88 due to revised dampers and bigger wheels

Saxo VTS or VTR should be less rotten and as cheap as you like, mechanical very similar to the Pug 106.

Alfa 145 Cloverleaf? Never driven one but they're meant to be good fun and you're more likely to find one that hasn't been abused

Mk2 Golf GTi 8V. Cheap, simple to work on and stupid fun.

16v are worth too much. The 8v is lighter.

How cheap do you want.

And lets face it, reliable is a subjective word and any cheap older car is only going to be so reliable.

But shall we say cars available for £1500 or so. So that'll include Ford Puma's, Nissan 100NX, Honda Prelude, MG ZS, Rover 200BRM, Triumph TR7, MG Metro Turbo or GTA, Rover 100 GTI, MKII Golf GTI, MGF, MR2 MK1/2/3, MX-5, Triumph Spitfire (maybe).

I second that notion - owned one for 40,000 miles, and loved every minute of it. Very 'B road' chuckable, with lots of mod cons too. More reliable than everyone thinks, although I always thought if everyone knew - they wouldn't be the bargains they are
