HELP! Really annoying radio fault on my 200 530!

I have an incredibly annoying fault on my E39 2000 530iA SE (with widescreen satnav).
The fault is the radio / CD / tape(!) intermittently cutting out. It is doing it more and more to the point where it works for just 10 seconds.
Other dongs etc work. Believe at this age its a BM24 unit and, possible, some soldering is required.
I am at my whits end. Doing 2000 miles per month in silence is painful, to the point of thinking of flogging the car!
So what do I do, baring in mind I am not mechanically minded, and my idea of a solder is a tough nut fighting in Iraq.
1. Live in silence
2. Flog the car
3. Attempt fixing the fault....is it difficult?
4. Buy an ipod.
5. Aftermarket jobby...what is out there? I do have the sat nav unit.
6. Get an indy to fix...How much would this cost?!
