Buying second hand alloys - aaaaaaargh

Ive been looking for a spare set of rims for ages now

I actually want the smaller ones than my own car comes with
As is obvious I have a drug dealer spec LR product driven by aspirational types who usually tastefully mod their P&J with unfeasibly big wheels

Thus Id have thought there'd be loads of standard factory rims out there from modders and upgraders

So why oh why oh why when I find a SH set on the usual website and then ask the not unreasonable question to see a pic of their car on its uprated rims to prove the provenance of their goods before I buy does the email trail usually die?

And yes I do know the answer

Or is there a rich vein of SH rims exploited by the masses to sell on that I havent found yet?
And I know the answer to that one too!

I can see your point but surely if someone is selling a set of wheels they are no longer on the car so taking a pic of them on the car will be a proper pain in the arse. If you are looking on ebay then you just have to trust the system, if the person has a decent amount of feedback then you're as safe as you can be on there, surely pics of the wheels alone will suffice?

I sold a set recently and if I got asked to take a pic of them on the car and I didn't have a pic already I would probably ignore the email too.

As said, if the wheels are already off the car then putting them back on is a pain so I wouldnt bother either.
They will sell easily enough without having to mess about like that.

Not owning a RR I'm not sure but the hassle of jacking a car up taking wheels off then putting another set on but on most cars it is a pain in the arse.

How about explaning to the seller that you are worried as you've been scammed in he past so maybe ask for a pic with today's newspaper next to them?

Just buy the bloody things. Imagine the situation:

You're selling some rims. You have several interested parties. One wants you to go and take a pic of your car to prove some suspicious sounding 'provenance'.

I'd tie things up pretty quickly.

What with the hysteria surrounding cloned cars and thievery in general I wouldn't be too keen on sending some pics of my shiny new LR with its easily steal-able freshly upgraded rims.

Good on you for checking, but what happens if they've taken the old wheels off, since sold the car with the drug dealer rims on it and just has those lying around in the garage?

If I'm reading this right, you want to buy their old rims and want a picture of the car on their new rims to prove they have the car and have taken the old wheel of it.

Not an unreasonable request but if everyone in this thread is reading it wrong maybe the owners of said wheels for sale also think you want them to jack up their car and re fit the wheels they have for sale which I doubt anyone would do.

I think the OP wants a photo of the car on it's NEW rims. To prove they own a car...

BUt of course this is not possible if you dont own the car, but own the wheels off one!

BUt of course the OP is trying to avoid stolen goods. I am afraid asking for a photo of a car with different wheels that the ones for sale does not really stop them selling stolen wheels. All they have to do is find a RRS on bling wheels and take a photo of it.

OP, if I were you, just buy a set!

I'd guess there are a few owners, who will upgrade their "rims" and simply store the normal wheels until in a year or two’s time, when they want to PX the car for the next latest greatest school run ghetto crawler, the normal wheels will get bolted back on and the "rims" sold off to the next group of tasteless dollops!

If so, then I wouldn’t mind posting up an old picture with the number plates blanked out. It seems like a sensible request from a sensible person.

It seems OP wants a pic of the car on it's NEW wheels, what that proves I'm not sure.

Not everyone is a petrolhead with pics of theirs cars for a pic with the old wheels on gj88.

What an odd question to be asking. I have a set of wheels for a Peugeot 306 sitting in the garage - I bought them just before the car was scrapped due to headgasket woes. I certainly wouldn't bother entertaining the OP's request if I were to sell them. After all, it doesn't serve any actual purpose - it doesn't prove the condition or the status of the wheels he wants to buy, and it prevents anyone who doesn't happen to own the car anymore or have a previous picture of it from selling to him.

The fact that it doesn't serve a purpose would make me suspicious of the OP - why would he want a picture of my car? Perhaps he's a car thief, or some kind of scammer!

Now pictures of the wheels themselves, fine - that makes sense.

What would prevent a "dodgy" seller taking a pic of a random (they are not exactly rare) RR on aftermarket alloys and sending that pic?.

A pic of a car isn't proof that the wheels are from that car or that the car even belongs to the seller of the wheels.

Unless you want the picture taken in front of their house with the V5 showing the address clearly displayed in the photograph?.

Still wouldn't be proof that they didn't steal the wheels from someone else's RR.

I'd ignore you, because what you are asking for is totally inconsequential to my selling of the wheels, in much the same way as I'd not send you a photo of my house just because you wanted to buy my old sofa.

Check the feedback & other items for sale.

If they are littered with wheel sales for random vehicles chances are something's not right, unless there's a breakers yard in the photo backgrounds.
