50mpg+, Cheap to run & no more than £2k

I wouldn't bother with the 1.4HDi engine if you go for the 206. As cheap as it is to tax and run, it's biblically slow.

The 2.0HDi is a much better engine. Pretty bulletproof, quite tunable and has a bit of go about it.

The 1.6HDi engine in them was notoriously unreliable and is to be avoided.

I'm always concerned about the running cost on cheaper, older diesel cars. A friend has had to spend a fortune running a 307 turbo diesel I think he's had quotes of well over £1k to fix the anti pollution filter.

I'd rather spend £2k on a clio 172 and put up with 40-45mpg.

40-45mpg from a 172? Doubt it.

I managed an average of 32mpg in my 182 over 6 months. Mostly motorway driving to work, with the odd hoon and a little bit of town driving

My 172 is averaging 42 mpg, of that it's pretty much solely used for commuting which is about 70/30 A-road/Urban, if you go over 80mph the consumption drops considerably but keep it at 75 or under and it easily does over 40mpg. tax & insurance aren't cheap though

I think a small engined petrol will see you over 50mpg and be cheaper to maintain. Punto 1.2 perhaps? 50mpg (combined), group 3 insurance and Tax band E.

Focus TDDI. Not particularly modern, fast or refined, but its agricultural nature makes up for that by being near-indestructible.

205 DTurbo - again, not refined, but it's another agriculturally-reliable engine and it shares its suspension with the GTI, so it's a good fun drive.

If you want value, rock bottom running costs, then you need to look at things which arent cool or popular.

If you want cheap to run, you want the newest, lowest mileage car you can find.

You also dont want French (IMHO).

Mine averaged over 55mpg over 50,000 miles and was very reliable.
Not a fun car, but a very good A to B runner.
