M1 around Nottingham....

As I understand it, the cameras are only switched on when the speed limit signs are on (i.e if they are flashing 40 or 50 etc). Obviously if you are travelling faster than the indicated speed on the signs, even if the road is clear, the cameras will flash. If they are not displaying anything (which I would imagine to be the case on a Saturday evening), the cameras are not switched on. I am told that it is the same for all these types of overhead message signs, like the ones further south from J10-6A and on the M25 near Heathrow.
Thanks for the reply Chris but it was my understanding that there were not any cameras actually installed there; the gantries and road markings are there but the cameras aren't. I've checked the various county websites and they son't mention cameras there so I think I'm probably ok...
The 14 day waiting game begins again.

Saw some of the grey gatso type cameras installed today on the M1 Northbound side - gantry just after jnc 25. Not sure about the southbound - will look on way home tonight - not sure if active, just like types at M1/M25 junction end, may only work when variable limit in force...happy days

Oh great. I came up there yesterday and there was no sign but I will be sure to pay a lot more attention to them from now on.
Checked out on way home and in to work today, Northbound 3 gantries out of 5 I think filled up, all four lanes, between jnc 25 and Trowell services. 1st gantry after Trowell has on outer two lanes only and 1st gantry after jnc 26 has outer two lanes only. None installed Southbound yet.
They didn't seem to be flashing even though cars obviously over limit so perhaps they do just work when the variable limit is on.

Check out....

Basically the legal instrument to allow/Activate the whole camera system comes into effect MONDAY 18TH APRIL 2011.
Expect to see more cameras go up this week in advance of the 'switch on'.... although it has to be noted that, although the instrument kicks in next week the Highways Agency can switch on the cameras any time after that....
HOPE THIS HELPS!

Thanks for the link. Answered one of my questions.
What happens if the sign changes as you approach but you are too close to drop to the displayed speed.
Looks like if the sign changes and you go through within 10 seconds you are ok as long as you're not speeding over the national limit.

Hi there,
It does seem that there is a 10 second delay when the signs change.
I looked at a Parliamentary question time from back in November with the following view from the guy who brought this legislation in. It seems that the cameras will not enforce the national speed limit ONLY the variable ones (see below transcript):
22 Nov 2010 : Column 30W—continued
Speed Limits: Cameras
Mr Knight: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport pursuant to the answer of 5 July 2010, Official Report, column 11W, on M1: speed limits, whether fixed speed cameras will be used to detect offences of speeding over 70 miles per hour. [25203]
Mike Penning: Speed enforcement cameras to be installed as part of the controlled motorway system on the M1 motorway between junctions 25 and 28 are not being introduced to enforce the national speed limit.
When no restrictions are in place, the signals will not show any speed limits, and will therefore indicate that normal motorway regulations and enforcement regimes apply.
