My new job comes with a company car which I'm free to source myself.

Criteria:

Budget £10k
Used (Up to 3 years old max, preferably 1 or 2)
Diesel I imagine is the sensible option for doing 30k+ miles pa
Decent residual values
Comfortable
Nice to drive
Ford Focus sized

I currently drive a W reg Focus 2.0 Ghia, petrol. Really like it, but it is getting on a bit.

Suggestions? Examples?

+1 on newer Focus, pretty good cars for slogging about in imo

Bit disappointed opening this thread up, I was hoping for "what interesting vehicle would you recommend for 10k" so I could vulture in!

I'm looking for a boring car at the moment but my budget is around the £6k mark, but that just means you'll get a newer version of whatever I end up having.

I test drove a 1.6 Focus Zetec Tdci yesterday and felt very comfortable in it. I think that's the way to go for me!

For that budget you might as well get something big and German, they're cheap as chips now and if you're going to do 30k p/a in it you need something comfy.

Audi A6 2.7 TDi

Audi A6 3.0 TDi

W211 Mercedes E320 CDi

ETA.

Bigger than a Focus, but oh well they meet the other criteria.

Octavia, little bit bigger than the Focus but based on the Golf chassis so that much larger. Very good diesel engines but without Volkswagen prices. can be tricky to find though as a lot of owners keep them to 110k miles or more.

Does it really make any sense to buy a car with nearly 100,000 miles on the clock to START commuting in?

Might just be me, but I wouldn't dream of buying a 100,000 mile car as a daily driver...

Especially given that every one of these suggestions is too old to meet the OPs requirements. rolleyes

In my opinion, yes. I did 100,000 miles in 3.5 years some time back. That would be massive depreciation on any newish car but on an old ZX TD the depreciation was minimal (I got £90 from the scrappy when the radius arm bearings went at 198,000 miles. Fuel, maintenance and depreciation cost me about 16p/mile, so as I was claiming a mileage allowance it actually made me £10k profit. Agree that the OP is after something a little newer though

Currently just hit the nail - same question for me. But dervs do require more money, I opted for an R26 megane. 2007 one owner, 22k miles, £9+k

Or try the 175 DCI megane - low mileage high mpg etc....with the brakes and set up of an r26...

german cars will have too many miles....

but bmw 320d is the best allrounder

I had a Focus hire car last year and wasn't impressed by the quality of it. It didn't look like it would take 30k miles a year that well. The engine (1.6 TDCi) was pretty gutless as well.

Out of the above I would go for the Civic. Strong engine with a quality interior.

At that budget you could look at something like a very new Kia Soul which is quite funky and not a bad steer for a normal vehicle. The C'eed is more conventional looking but a good car too and you'll get more Kia for your money than you will Golf. Also the 7 year warranty should be handy if you plan to keep it for a few years.
