How long do insurance claims take??

Looking for a bit of advice please. My son (named driver) had a no fault accident in the middle of july and after about 6-7 weeks of the insurance company trying to get out of it, saying he was the main driver etc etc they finally agreed that he was only a named driver. Since then we have heard nothing, coming up to 3 months down the line and still nothing. Going to phone them tomorrow.

Is this normal?? never had to claim before so have no experience of how long these things take.cheers

It depends on how many parties are involved with the claim, if there are a few then it takes a while for all the different companies to talk to each other and sort out who is to blame.

Depends on the circumstances and how long the 3rd party takes to get their act together.

My recent one took 6 months but my mates took 2 weeks

Took me 9 months - and the involvement of the FSO - to get a sensible amount out of Norwich Union when their insured ran up the boot of my eldests car & wrote it off.
After we refused their second laughable offer they simply ignored any correspondence. Obviously banking on the fact that as we needed to replace the car ASAP we would cave in. A tactic I expect they all use.

hi, thanks for the replies, the 'guilty' party took awhile to respond so that wouldnt have helped. So is it worth keep hassling them or is just a case of waiting. The damage is about £900 worth so expect them to write it off (v reg clio) but in the meantime having to use the car for work. Was thinking about contacting the FOB to try to hurry it up. will phone them today. thanks again

Demand a courtesy car as yours is damaged and you don't feel safe driving it.

When there paying £50/day they tend to hurry things along, but not always!

I had a collision which took a month to get a courtesy car, then 9 months driving 4 different courtesy cars (Fiesta - Not suitable, Astra - Not Suitable, Vauxhall Insignia - needed 4 tyres, brakes and a couple of services after I had it for 6 months and finally a "Peacock Green" Vectra)

The wheels turn slowly, but push for a courtesy car in the meantime (may as well put miles on their car than yours!)

If the car has been deemed a write off the OP may not get a courtesy car as some insurers only provide them if the car is damaged but repairable.
Although the OP did say that they haven't made a decision as to whether its has been declared W/O so it may be worth a call any way to see if he can get one until its declared a W/O.

hi, we did get offered a hire car but the problem was they wouldnt put my lad on it, which defeats the point really as we pay (through the nose) for him to have access to a car.

Ah i thought so in most cases car hire will cover young drivers but only from 18 upwards.

ETA will vary per insurer.
