German pressed Numberplates for UK cars with "D" marking

I've seen these on a few BMW's and VW's, I think they look st, are almost certainly illegal (marked as being a German Registered car, incorrect font, incorrect spacing) and I really just don't see the point?

Can someone enlighten me??

Of all the things to get wound up about why do people get so pissed off about number plates? In the great scheme of things folks I dont understand why it even registers on anyones radar

Its a "scene" thing, you know.. Like the OEM German Plate Holders, things like that.

I reckon the owners of such cars feel sorry for the police. In order to help plod meet targets they give them an easy way to issue an FPN for an illegal numberplate.

I used to have these on my MK2 Golf as I thought they looked better.

Unfortunately I was pulled over and given a producer for it. The Police were nice to me though and I had no problem with it as I was aware of the illegality.

The one on the grey Golf GT appears to use the French font, not German

But IMO pressed steel plates look a bit cheap and old anyway, thats what i didn't understand.

I don't get wound up about plates, but I would like to know that I can quickly identify the car thats just hit me/my car by its numberplate.

If it looked like that I/you would say it was a foreign car, thus massively increasing the chances of them not being caught and costing lots of my tax to investigate.

Just wondered if they were fitted because the pressed steel looks good, or if its the german country marking or what that attracted people to fit them?

+1! As long as they haven't been tampered with and aren't in a stupid font that's unreadable, what's the problem? I know that I for one can read a plate whether it's written AB60 CDE or AB 60C DE, it makes absolutely no difference as they're all in the same order! I'm pretty sure ANPR cameras can read them however they're spaced as I saw on a Police Interceptors episode a few weeks back.

They don't offend me, just like US style plates on American cars don't. I can understand why they're put on but wouldn't do it myself.

Whist your recovering from them clipping you/your car/your child and speeding off at 60MPH??

There was alot of development went into numberplate spacing etc so they are readable from a distance to identify drivers!

I've pressed aluminium plates on my car, but they're legal UK ones. I was few up with delaminating and cracking on the plastic ones. The aluminium ones just dent a bit, which is no problem.
