Horn problem, advice please

Hi Folks, I have a problem with my Griff horn, it does not work and have searched previous threads for tips but I am still beaten by it.I have also read S/H's Bible with no luck.
This is were I am at so far. The horns are OK and so is the circuit on the horn side of the relay (I can get them working by taking the cover off the relay and manually switching it),the relay is working OK out of the car. The fuse is not blown,the slip ring and the horn button is OK. The earth to the steering colomn is OK.
The problem is that the feed that powers the other side of the relay circuit to the steering wheel horn switch is not live, should it be permanently live? and if so, can anyone suggest where my problem lies or have I got my understanding of it all wrong
I would be most gratefull for any advice,thanks in advance.

This sounds sooooo familiar!
We had a major problem with the horn not working and there is a thread on here somewhere...
As I'm not a very technically minded person and I can't for the life of me remember what the problem was in the end, I will track down FFG and get him to contact you - either on here or via email...
Frustrating isn't it, when everything you try doesn't work and you can't work out if it's meant to be permanently live or whether pushing the horn button completes the circuit, etc, etc - oh we had such fun - for hours, and hours, and hours - you get the picture...!

Two posts within minutes - can't be bad! I'm sure I do have some work to do if I put my mind to it!
Right, I've just called FFG and he can't log on as he's in the motor! I've told him what your symptoms are and he says it's exactly the same problem we had.
The solution is simple - trust me - even I could do this one!
Basically the relay IS knackered, even though it seems to click/work. When you go to get a replacement relay, it's best to take the old one with you. You need to make sure that as well as the pins being the same, the numbers and switching are the same too.
We replaced our relay with one with the same pins and it still didn't work and we later discovered that it was because the switching was not the same.
Ours cost about a fiver so it's not an expensive job. And even quite a simple job, once you know what's wrong...
