Fifth Gear on Five
Discussion
i tried this track for the first time the other month in full GP format, I found it to be a bit point and squirt, with as I recall 5 straights that are led into by 3rd gear hairpins back up the box and down to 3rd again, the long corner leading on to the back straight was good but the tight twisties at the top of the track were a bit too fiddly, I just found the track didnt flow for me .
car was 230bhp caterham.

I've only driven the Full circuit, but I found the 'Corkscrew' corner to be an absolute delight. I think the coastal layout cuts out half of that corner which is a shame.
The Corkscrew is only used on the Coastal Circuit. The left hander at the top of the Corkscrew is used on the international GP circuit. Not sure what it's formal name is, but I refer to it as Mansfield - as it's very similar to that corner at Cadwell. The GP circuit adds a couple of straights and a hairpin, which is good for dispersing traffic (overtaking). Conversely the Coastal circuit is quite bad for bunching as there's no real straights to speak of.
Finally, the GP circuit is quite a bit safer than the Coastal circuit, because the most dangerous corner on the circuit (coming onto the pit straight) is slowed down and the car is in a straight line before you turn into the corner. Amazing how many people concentrate so hard on the Corkscrew that by the time the corner is over, they've forgotton about the off-camber, late-tightening corner onto the pit straight. The car is wobbling side to side from having negotiated the corkscrew at that point and it's caught a few people out.

Not sure I can even find the words to explain how much I disagree with that!Jonny

The GP circuit was great fun and the corkscrew extremely challenging, don't think i got it right all day but had great fun trying. Of course it helped that the weather was fantastic.

Which probably explains why you didn't get it right all day
IMHO the 'corkscrew' is the only bit of the circuit that doesn't 'flow' on the coastal, which is why I much prefer the other 2 layouts. Each to their own though.
