hi all
yesterday night i went out and on my way back i saw the dreaded double flash!
there was another car right next to me as there were three lanes, and he must have been speeding as a friend of mine saw him braking.

if a letter come to my house what should i do to avoid the points?
does the camera know at a situation like that where there are two cars right next to each other which one was speeding?
how does the camera know when there are three lanes which driver was speeding?
and finally when the camera takes the picture does it see all three lanes?

kind regards
all help is much appreciated and welcome

The road markings make it possible to calculate your speed between the two photos.

How much over the speed limit were you?

Was the other car over by more?

It's possible you were under the threshold to trigger the camera and he was over. Usually the thresholds are set to at least a margin of 10% + 2mph, 57 in a 50 zone, 79 in a 70, etc. The first 3 points on your licence are nothing to worry about (other than the fact they make you more vulnerable to any more points)...

the fact that im 19 and only had my licence for 1 and a half years means that if i get another 3 points i get my licence taken away from me
is it 2 years till the points get cleared?

it was a 30zone and when i checked my speed i was doing 35 so i think im going to get hammered for 3mph over the limit
thats really annoying as i dont even drive fast!

if im doing 3mph over the limit is there no way i could get let off? or even get let off with a fine? im just dreading the points!

jon_80 is correct. according to ACPO, there's usually a tolerance of 10% + 2 or 3 mph. This is usually to give drivers a bit of leeway, but also due to the fact the car speedos are not accurate either (they can't ever underread, so they tend to show faster than you're actually doing).

Easy for me to say, but you just have to sit tight and wait. You can't do anything about it now, so just wait and deal with it if/when it comes. If it does come, do ask for the photos, as it's a possible way to wriggle a bit by saying it could have been the adjacent driver etc.

Someone may correct me, but I was on the understanding there's also a set time a ticket has to be issued or it's not valid. Try and find what that period is and mark it on your calendar ;-)

Best of luck!

I would have thought it was rare to get convicted if it's a genuine 33. What are your other points for? Sometimes people are offered a speed awareness course instead of points, I believe.

I think the points last for 3 years. I'm sure someone more informed about it than me will be along soon. Things might have changed since I last got points about 10 years ago. At least in those days you usually knew straight away if you were going to get the points or not because you were pulled over and spoken to by a person.

I'm guessing it was a dual carriageway in an urban area.

Yes I heard this too.

I've been a terrible offender in terms of actual speeding, but I've just been lucky / vigilant about escaping detection. You tend to build up a knack over the years (I'm past 30 now) of devoting a part of your brain to this sort of background monitoring, especially at those times when you are going quickly. Also cruise control can really help to avoid the risk of letting the speed drift up, using it when you are in an area when you know there are cameras / frequent patrols etc. Also I speed less in areas I don't know so well.

I realise this is not much comfort to the OP (but something to bear in mind in the future) and I really sympathise over the stress and the waiting. At least the number of cameras is finally coming down.

Not all the cameras have film in them but they still flash. You may be lucky anyway.

Your speedo normally over reads it. You were probably doing 33 or even less.

Due to camera cut backs, you may also find a lack of film in them at the moment.

where is the road? A 3 lane 30MPH limit is rare...

There are loads of urban 30mph dual carriage ways leading into and out of cities. Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool all definately have them.

If the other guy was braking he may have slowed sufficiently to avoid being caught, you on the other hand have admitted speeding at 35 in a 30.
I have broken the speed limit like most people in the UK, but it doesn't matter how many people on the Internet say oh you'll be ok just do this etc if you were speeding and you'll be fine, you were still doing wrong.
You've been caught before and haven't learnt your lesson, maybe now you have a good chance of having what is a privilege NOT a right taken away from you, you may just learn.
Take your medicine like a man.

Right, as far as the 6 points/2 years thing goes, you are not allowed 6 points within the first 2 years of passing your test. As you are 19, if you passed when 17 then that 2 year period may have already passed and although you may be getting points your license will be safe.

I have been flashed once before, like you I was both annoyed and slightly worried, but the ticket never arrived. As someone has said above, there is a chance that there was no film in the camera.

Is that for congestion purposes then?

Some places offer 'driver awareness courses' if you were only just over the limit. You have do endure a long lecture and a fine in exchange for not losing points, I believe. This is only available in some parts of the country.

If your speedo was reading 35, it's likely you were doing more like 33, in which case I'd imagine a prosecution is unlikely. Still, if I was you I wouldn't be breaking the speed limit if another three points will see you banned.

Feel free to tell me to sod off for posting a wasted post but we could speculate all day. The only way is to just chill and forget about it until the letter comes through (usually under a month). Just make sure you drive at (speed limit-1) MPH through any cameras in future just to be sure.
