I have a 'cherished' plate which has been passed to me from a family member.

Unfortunately, due to a lot of circumstance, the plate was still on a car when the car was sold a few months back.

That car's new owner has helpfully agreed that the plate wasn't included in the deal and has, with the aid of said family member and I, put it on retention.

The retention certificate has now come through. I have a couple of questions:

1. The retention certificate names the chap who bought the car with the plate on it as the 'Grantee'

If I become the 'nominee' and transfer the number onto my car, is the plate then officially mine? As in, he has no title to it whatsoever?

I don't want him claiming it back at any point (it's worth a few quid)

2. Am I right in thinking that to transfer it, I now just fill out the retention document (which the grantee has signed) with my car's details, post it off to my local DVLA office with my V5 and MOT and wait for new paperwork?

TIA

Yes.

Longer answer is that as you have the certificate of retention with you as the nominee and him as the grantee, the plate is legally yours, and he has no recourse.

as above.

the grantee has the title to the plate. The nominee has no right to the plate.
As soon as you put it on your car the title goes to you.

I would suggest if at all possible you go in person to your nearest DVLA Local Office. Consider the time, cost and hassle involved in getting duplicate documents for that little bundle.

As long as you don't want to retain or transfer the existing plate on your own car, you can fit your new number plates the same day.
