I have a 1997 523i that is in need of a new engine. I'am finding it hard sourcing another single vanos M52b25 and i was wondering if an engine from the 528i is an option? I'm looking to get as close to plug and play as possible. Does anyone know how do'able this is?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

No problems fitting an M52 525/325 engine in that, straight fit and lots more power.

Have you looked into fitting a J2 engine (Toyota Supra) or Lexus V8. Both of these units are very popular conversions for BMW's. The J2 engine has a standard output of 300bhp with 400-500BHP being achieve with mild tuning. Some chaps I know are running 650 - 900+BHP. The Lexus engine provides more refinement and torq and has the similar tuning options to the J2 unit.

Point being, there is a good supply of base engines and the OP doesn't have to tune the motor given they have reasonable power output in standard form. A simple re-map will provide some extra power. I agree that 350 and upwards BHP will start to cost more money.

Make sure you get a replacement engine out of another 5 series as the 3 series has the sump bump in a different place.

thanks for the comments guys. I have bought an engine from a V reg 523i with less miles. The only difference is that the new engine is double vanos whereas my original was only single. The chap i have ordered the engine from is also throwing in the ECU and key/transponder. Do i need to use these?

you'll definitely need the ECU.

Have a look at the ignition barrel, if it has a pronounced plastic ring around it then the car has BMW's security system (EWS) which will make life difficult.

I think you'll be swapping an M50 (your original engine) for an M52. Not sure how straight forward it is TBH.

I don't recall a pronounced plastic ring but i cant tell for sure as the car is in a garage. Am i right in thinking that i will need the new ecu to run the twin vanos engine and i will need the key and transponder as that is paired with the ECU? Externally the engines look near on identical.
