E36 M3 - Talk To Me
Discussion
Hey,
I'm really wanting a convertible to run as a daily car and quite like the e36 m3. What are the running costs like on one of these? A quick look at the classifieds and they can be had for about £5k? What are the maintenance/service costs on average per year and what kind of real world mpg do you guys get? Is it reliable enough to be used as a daily? I already have a "second car" so need to justify this as my daily driver.
Cheers

go for it, ive just done exactly what your thinking of doing, ive just braught a m3 e36 convertible. if you look hard, you will find a good one for under £5k, mine had 74,000miles, nice clean car, full service history etc, and i paid £3,800. fuel economy, mentioned already(previous post) all depends how you drive it, short journeys, around 26mpg. good luck.
I reckon 26mpg is bang on, that's what my Evo always seems to settle on with a mixture of driving but mostly short/cold journeys in traffic with the odd blast. On a motorway run at speeds beginning with an 8, 32mpg is no problem, and even after a few laps of the 'ring I didn't see less than 14mpg.
26mpg average isn't optimistic at all, especially if you make use of 6th in anything over a 30mph limit.
Also mine hasn't cost me much in the year/10k miles I've done since I bought it, just the usual oil/filter type things. For a 13 year old car with 120k miles its been solid, easily the most reliable car I've owned.

obviously the 6 speed box improves mpg alot i'm doing about 20mpg average, 28 on a run and on track about 8 mpg, my driving style must differ to some others as well, at the end of the day imo you dont but a m3 for fuel economy26mpg average isn't optimistic at all, especially if you make use of 6th in anything over a 30mph limit.

I bought my Evo convertible a few weeks ago and I have fallen head over heels with it. I was originally looking to get a Jag XKR to replace my XJR (which was a great car, but ultimately a bit boring) but I had an open mind and kept returning to this M3 Evo in PH classifieds. Long story short, I bought it. Rare colour, 39K miles, mint condition with the most complete and comprehensive history I have ever seen on an 11 year old car, right down to receipts for every service. The previous owner also spent some hefty money on upgrades such as a full Milltek exhaust from Thorney Motorsport, and so on - quite loud to say the least.
Can't comment on running costs as mine hasn't needed anything except a few bits I chose to buy for it. Serviced before I bought it and all the service lights are still green. My research suggested they can cost a bit servicing wise but nice cars are never that cheap to keep anyway.
I averaged around 34 mpg all the way from Slough to Somerset in the pouring rain when I picked it up. I now average around 21mpg mostly bombing around locally, and I can't resist pushing the pedal down when it's nicely warmed up, just for the rush and the scream from that Milltek system. I can tell you that insurance is a bit nasty though, costing about twice what I paid for my Jag XJR. But it's worth it because the car is just fun. I have a van for work so will only do around 2K miles a year in it, although it is still my daily driver in that it lives outside (under a car cover), and gets used whatever the weather.
Get a good one and you'll be smitten.
