Bonnet stays - anyone used these???
Discussion
I need something robust to support my rear/body engine cover - loading is about 12kgs on each of two struts.
I've tried gas struts in a multitude of different mounting planes/positions but they distort the panel when the body is closed up so that the shut lines are completely messed up.
I've seen these, http://www.cbsonline.co.uk/bonnet--boot-lid-stay-l... can they will just about stretch to provide the required opening, BUT how much of a loding can they take? Obviously unlike a gas strut they are under no load when closed which adresses the shut line issue, but are they heavy duty enough for my application?
Alternatively, does anyone know where else mechanical struts of this kind of size can be obtained???

Steve,
Imagine if the rear cover of your Ultima were hinged at the rear of the cockpit on the roof, and to open it the whole panel was lifted from the lower rear edge. That is waht I a dealing with - something of similar size/weight.
The struts would sit between a mount on the removable rail near the rear damper, and a point 12" forward (when closed) onto the inside of the wheel arch panels.
Its a lot of weight to support, its also not very rigid.
