2018 World Cup Bids For Sale
Discussion
Every now and again the shady backroom realities of major sports make a front page appearance. Everyone else on the take at FIFA will be raising their prices with the release of this story. It's looks like the F.A could have secured two votes for about £1m. Not entirely sure they will be happy with this expose
[i]Two Fifa officials have offered to sell their votes in the contest to host the 2018 World Cup, according to a Sunday Times report.
The newspaper has video footage in which Nigerian Amos Adamu, a Fifa executive committee member, appears to ask for £500,000. This is completely against Fifa rules. They are all on the take. The Nigerian just couldn't be bothered to dress it up as funding for a "sports academy" or even a General that he knows that needs rescuing.
With this in mind, an outside bet on it going to Russia might be worth a few pennies if everyone is being bought off. Then again, it might strengthen the case for them swinging the votes to England to come through this latest FIFA shambles.
The plot thickens..
Edited to add: Old Mr Adamu did indeed dress it up. The £500k was for four artificial footy pitches, apparently.
