Angela Merkel - She has some balls!
Discussion
We could do with abolishing all the translation nonsense, if you cannot speak the national language, and make an effort to integrate, (of which language is a key part), then, I'm sorry, please go back home.
We are ending up with ghettos where hardly anyone speaks English, has nothing in common with the country and where UK laws are widely ignored, think of areas where insurance and licences are looked upon as something that others have.

Merkel is a tenacious mixed bag. Given her East German roots and former role as Secretary for Agitation and Propaganda in a socialist youth movement, then later in her political life emerging as a reasonably pro-market physicist, the next most useful thing she can say is that socialism is an utter utter failure.

I know a few who forget how to speak English when it suits them.We are ending up with ghettos where hardly anyone speaks English, has nothing in common with the country and where UK laws are widely ignored, think of areas where insurance and licences are looked upon as something that others have.

Tourism is an interesting angle here. I visit Asia frequently with work. Some areas cater well for the English speaker. Other areas not at all. When I get chance, and have the time, I always try to get about and see the places I visit. Most recently, I've been to several places in China. Not speaking the language, and not being offered language support does not restrict your enjoyment of a different place and culture as a tourist.

Lack of integration will always cause problems, but multi-culturalism isn't necessarily a failure. They are not one and the same. What has contributed to the mess (quite a lot) is the constant fear of offending some group or other, or offence being taken on someone's behalf.

Swap "English" and "UK" for "Spanish" in that quote and you get the Iberian gripe in the Canaries and on the Costas We are ending up with ghettos where hardly anyone speaks English, has nothing in common with the country and where UK laws are widely ignored, think of areas where insurance and licences are looked upon as something that others have.

Saying multiculturalism has 'failed, utterly failed'. Also that immigrants should actually speak German!
Will have to see how this progresses.
I hate to say this (and I can't believe I'm saying this) but Tony Blair said something similar about the UK multicultural experiment 3 or 4 years ago. Will have to see how this progresses.
