Just thought i,d share this photo with you,this is me working at my dads old garage in 1961 showing how cheap petrol was then.4 gallons for under a pound! they were certainly the days.

Which is more than we can do in France. Couldn't go to the meet today because all petrol stations were closed, the refineries being blockaded. Not a drop of jungle juice available, and filling cans when t is prohibited.

What was the average wage at that time?

Dunno, but in 1961 I got 12p an hour working on the farm for the harvest, and in 1962 working for Sun Life Cheapside I got £300 pa plus £30 London weighting.

12p an hour!! thats 12d as we used to call it. Along with ten bob, half crown, one pound note, tanner. Must be some more 'old money' terms I expect. Wonder if any fuel service provided garages still exist in U.K.

I love 'period' piccies like this. It nice to see how things were before the whole supermarket petrol station thing took off.

I wish petrol was that cheap today, it would certainly make filling up the car less of an assault on the bank account!

Er, well no really. 2/6d an hour equals a 12.5p. I remember buying petrol at 4/6d a gallon, so about 22p if my maths is correct. But life was cheap, my mother bought a house in Portsmouth for £500, cigarettes were about 10p a packet - one could go on, but hell, we earned less and spent less. We certainly drank less, although I remember that three pints of brown and mild was 5/- exactly, or 25p. But we could only afford to drink Friday and Saturday evenings, and the rest of the week was spent indoors with the - B&W - TV.

Yes quite right, I had forgotten the values in the conversions just imagine walking about now with an pocket full of change in the old small money denominations. One pound would weigh your trousers down good and proper.

Looking at an inflation calculator at 22p a gallon in 1961 it'd be around £3.10p now, but from the rise to 50p in late 73 due to the middle east war it would be equivalent to £4.10 now.

My wage now would be the equivalent of £34 in 1961 but I'm sure my dad only earned around £10PW back then.

Where was this garage??

The garage was at 154 high road chadwell heath essex,It is still there today but not as a petrol stn.I moved out in 1966,I worked for my dad when i left school in 1964 as a trainee mechanic on £4 17s 4d.I had 2 vespa GS scooter,s on hire purchase at that time that cost me 7s 6d a week.I was always seizing them up as i used to get fed up running them in so i had one as a spare when the other was off the road.My dad would always have a lay in on a sunday morning so my friend would come round really early and i would stick a set of trade plates on a new sunbeam tiger and take it for a drive over to hainault an back before it was missed.Happy days LOL.

I can remember petrol 4 star 50p a gallon in the 70s ,

interestingly .here in Russia unleaded is 24 roubles a litre around 50p ...and in Egypt it was just 9p a litre !!
