What neck brace if you havent got harnesses (yet)
Discussion
I have been looking at neck braces used for circuit racing, karting and motorcross like these http://www.evs-sports.com/product/neck-protection/...
Does anyone know or had any experience with the above? Will it work? or am i missing something?
I know everyone swears by the Hans system but i havent got all the bits needed for it to work properly!

Here is a similar one in action. Looks like the motorcross guys neck gets some punishment so should work in a car? Do you think?

Overkill for track days? Harnesses are good on track as they hold you in place so you don't brace yourself on the wheel and so concentrate on controlling the car more. Neck braces are more crash protection, not something you should be that worried about on a trackday, you don't want to be pushing to the extent of being worried about crashing.

So no point to a helmet either presumably? I know I have a weakness in my neck and if I were to crash I would probably completely knacker it so I would definitely consider a neck brace - stupidly one of the things that would put me off would be the judgements from others in the pit lane.

I admit I've never been on track at a Castle Combe Action Day or Knockhill Hot Hatch Day, but seeing the video's for them I'd want to be in a WRC style caged Volvo with all the safety gear.
Regular days with normal people, I feel perfecty safe in my little plastic car.
I understand that you have never seen anyone wear neck protection, are you saying that no one has ever had a neck injury on a track day? I know there has been which is why im asking for advice! Should you really be telling people not to wear protection even if there is a minute posibility it could help and does help!
There seems to be this thing that if you're bothered about safety on a track day you must be a s
t driver or batting for the other side! But when someone does get hurt its usualy a neck injury and people saying they should have / wished they had worn a neck brace.
The track i will be on is Oulton Park which has some big'ish straights so i would like to be protected as you cant predict if you're going to have an off or not. Im not going to be going wild but you cant say there is absolutley no possiblity ever of having a big off with factors like, brake failure, wet condtions, blow out, etc etc.
Plus im pretty sure there are people with weaker necks than others for whatever reason, how would you measure that?
Can anyone advise on a good neck brace that can be used with and without harnesses?
PM me if you want to remain anonymous!!

I suspect if you ask in the Motorsport section you'll get more people responding with advise on neck braces as the risk of an accident is so much higher they are likely to be used more. They won't know about with standard seat belts though as they'll all have harnesses. I suspect most racers these days go HANS.There seems to be this thing that if you're bothered about safety on a track day you must be a s

Awesome thankyou!!
Here is a good quote/read
"Its fairly obvious that in most accidents a Hans would be far better, but I think the question was neck brace or no neck brace..
The answer to that one is again equally simple... get some form of neck brace. When i first started I didnt wear one, but after a fairly big off at croft and some very expensive physio bills I've always worn one, and I've had some bigger offs with no problem since..
I use the sparco jobby, and it has the added benifit that you can have a quick snooze in the car an nobody notices..
I even wear it if i go karting, it looks daft but neck damage seems cumulative so even a small shunt without a neck brace can give you problems later..
A Hans is expensive but a basic brace isnt. you can make excuses not to spend a grand on a hans and helmet, but I cant really see an excuse for not spending 65 quid on a foam neck brace.. after all thats less than 1 hour with most physios..."
They are saying at minimum get one of these http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/Motorsport/Head_&...

You've sold it to me - I'm gonna get one for next seasonEdited by rocketride on Tuesday 19th October 18:17
I used a simple "cheap" sparco foam neck brace for 2 years on 2 stoke go karts and it would say it help with the day to day knocks that are common in go karting. Wound not know about big chrashs and dont want to. It also help hold the weight of your head and helmet when cornering. so as above even a cheap one will help but never used it in a car exsept at the ring for a few laps
