Looking for a new exhaust system and back box for my wrx sti (reg 97). Wanted to get rid of the cat in the system but keep the one in the down pipe. wanted a stainless steel and about the same noise maybe slightly louder but not "mental". Any advise guys prices, makes.

I have had the following:

  • Standard STI exhaust – quiet and not much ‘burble’.
  • Prodrive backbox – brings out the burble and sounds nice on tick over. Not offensive when driving, but does have a nice roar when booting it. IMO expensive second hand.
  • Ninja II – not that much louder than the Prodrive on tick over, but a lot louder on full boost. Paid 100 pounds for one second hand. Really nice exhaust IMO and a good balance.
  • Afterburner Vortex – ridiculous (I love it). Its getting louder because its sooting up and starting to hurt my ears when I start the car in the garage. My neighbours hate me. Expensive new at 300 pounds.
I have a de-resonated centre section which can make the car sound a bit raspy when cold (although this goes soon enough), and makes it loud in the cabin (however, I only use the car weekends with all the windows open wink. Removing the centre cat will make it louder still. With both the de-res centre and de-cat the car pops and bang all the time too smile

i have an almost new afteburner vortex exhaust for sale, maximum of 200 miles use, in as new condition, only taken off due to upgrading to blitz nurspec r, love the noise of them!!!

the afterburner is loud but imho not stupidly loud, nothing like a blitz nurspec, they are ridiculously loud hence why i have one.

The Blitz is loud, but supposedly does not perform as well as some of the others. Another proper neighbour anoyer is the Buddy Club. Personally I rate the Ninja as its makes some noise when booting it, but its not intrusive at cruising speed / revs.

Why have they all got such terrible names?!

OP - I had a Racebox (Scoobyworld) on mine and it was good without being too loud. However, whenever you get rid of a cat (or even move to sports cats) you're going to increase the volume.

When I bought mine (from Scoobyworld in Loughborough) they were happy to let me try several different backboxes on my car (just for a quick spin down the road) before I chose one.

Two things though:

1) YouTube clips are not a great indicator of how your car will sound.
2) They always should even better once they've built up some carbon inside!
