Mattresses - personal experience recommendations

Hi folks,

sick to death of trying to get a decent nights sleep on a crap mattress

Can anyone recommend (from personal experience) a quality hand made mattress?

Personal preference is to medium/firm

Sleepeze or Sealy both do brilliant mattresses. Dreams, believe it or not, carry a good range and can order in too. John Lewis is probably the best shop around.

Seriously, get a Tempur, struggled for years on even decent quality pocket sprung mattresses and they all eventually fail. Now I get a wonderful nights sleep. Even bought them for the kids too.

Bloody 'ell...just done all this with wife, trying to find one that you both like is hard work.
Another one for Sealy here, i found Dreams a tad dearer than the others, still spent £800 on a bloody mattress tho.

tempur too hot for me ( try one though its free ) i chose a feather and blacks as theres i think 9 diff comfort settings

This is the problem I had with a "tempur like" matress

Did hear you can get toppers that keep the heat off your body though?

I'm rocking a Sleepeezee Touch Classic 2000 at the moment. Nice pocket sprung with wool fill and a fairly thick memory foam top. It's the most comfortable mattress I have slept on.

It was mid priced at about £800 4 years ago for a king size.

I got a harrison`s mattress from these people about 6mths ago, they assesed myself and my wife and we had different sides, medium on one and firm on the other,just under £700. http://www.totalbackcare.co.uk/for-sleeping.html

I bought a Memory foam mattress (not Tempur) that has a "cool" cover attached and has been superb.

My missus has a tempur at her parents and I cook everytime we stay over and it seriously put me off memory foam mattresses but this one has been brilliant and you get all the benefits but it loses the ehat like a traditional mattress.

I'll try and dig out the make for you this evening.

memory foam mattress for me all the way. i have a HYPNIA. and it great i have never slept so well in my entire life. mines a 12 inch mattress which equates to 3 inches of memory foam.

as for them being warm i have not had an issue and i run quite warm any way.

i could point you in the direction of a band new cheep one if your interested

Try to buy from an independant not a plate glass place on a retail park.You will save £100's.

Got a Sealy sprung matress with memory foam on top. The whole bed was £600 and was money well spent. Have also got a memory foam pillow.

I had the best sleep in ages in a hotel whilst working away for a few days. I checked the mattress and it was made by Hypnos.

I called Hypnos directly who said that it was made especially for hotels and that they did not sell to individuals but I said that I didn't want to try any others as it was the hotel one I wanted.

The woman on the phone relented and ordered one for me and it arrived about 5 weeks later and it was only £250 for a standard double which was a great saving over the Hypnos mattresses that are available to the public.

Worked for me as 3 nights sleep is a better test than just quickly lying on them in the showroom.

I think ours are 'Sleap Easy' and/or 'Sealy'. The main thing seems to be: just buy a more expensive one; it's far more important than the base. Pocket sprung is best, memory foam a bit of personal preference.

ETA- don't buy cheap pillows, either. I prefer the foam ones designed to sort your neck out.

Another vote for Vi-Spring. Hand-made traditional mattresses made in Plymouth, I believe. Not cheap, but flippin' brilliant.
