Have you or would you eat horse meat?

I had a fantastic pasta dish in Italy this summer which was thin strips of smoked horse meat in a creamy sauce that really was delicious (so much so that I had seconds).

Not something I would probably order myself but it was a set menu.

Since then I've mentioned it to a few people when talking about food and they have been genuinely shocked that I could eat it. My new girlfriend who is pretty adventurous with food said she couldnt eat horse as its a majestic animal and she couldnt think of it as a source of food.

Whats the general consensus on here?

I haven't but would eat it, if it tasted rancid I wouldn't eat it again but you've got to give it a go.

I've eaten it several times in France. Ordered it in a restaurant to try and then bought a couple of steaks for myself to BBQ. Wife had a beef steak instead as she didn't want to eat it and the kids would have been mortified so kept it quiet.

I work in switzerland, there are quite a few local resturants round here that routinely serve horse steak or horse burgers.

Chances are if you've eaten a burger in france you've already had horse.

Fine with me.

I've had horse burger in France before and see nothing wrong with eating it, once it's on the plate it's just meat after all. I don't buy into the notion that just because something is frowned upon in the UK doesn't mean we shouldn't embrace other cultures when travelling abroad.

If I went to Korea I'd probably eat dog if someone served it up & I was hungry. I don't think I'd want to choose it from a cage though, then have them take it out the back and bring it back 15 minutes later cooked. That's probably pushing it a bit.

Yep, and jolly nice it was indeed.

Just rationalise it this way; it's better than turning it into glue.

Very nice in peppercorn sauce, when grilled it tasted quite minerally to me, quite strong but a great texture.

a few times, it's a common starter at traditional rabbit-based evenings out (Fenkata) in Malta. No problem with it, although I love to watch horses run, especially if I've backed the winner!!

I also love to watch a pig snuffle but it would never put me off a bacon sarnie!

Dogs are off the menu because they eat meat, that's my only criterion I think. Not fussed about how fluffy or cute my dinner used to be.

Always try and pick some up in France to bring home when over there on trips.

Fantastic meat. AS far as I can tell, the only reason it is not commonly available in the UK is because we have a national squeamishness about eating it.

It's delicious.

Whenever I'm in France I try to pick up some horse and (rose) veal steaks for what I call 'cruelty combo'.

I've eaten donkey salami in Corsica and that was good too.

Yep - really nice it is too - really earthy tasting - don't see why there is a stigma around it - you use glue don't you?

The last time I was in Frenchland, visited the local Chevallier (sp?) to buy some. The guy didn't exactly do himself any favours, he saw straight through my dodgy French and asked where I was from. Upon hearing I was from Scotland, he said "Ahh, Scotland. You don't eat much horse there. You do have those nice Shetland Ponies though" creepy bugger.

The saucisson man in Dijon market sells all sorts of bizarre concoctions. Donkey, bull, goat, horse etc. All of them, delicious.

Yes a couple of times in France and Belgium. Enjoyed it and would have it again.
Once you get your head around the fact that "we" have them as "pets" then its just a piece in the food chain.

A restaurant I went to tried to pass off horse meat as chicken...

The six-foot drumstick was a dead giveaway though.

I lived in Antwerp for a while when I was younger and knew an Irish guy who was a butcher. He always used to bring back horse steaks. I can remember them tasting very nice, but being a little tougher in texture than beef.

I used to ride horses when I was a kid, but that still didn't put me off!
