Hello, maybe being a bit o.t.t here, but my wife had two tyres done on her car last week, thread was too low for the MOT.

She took it down for the cars MOT, the chap at the garage told her one of the tyres had been put on back to front. The tyre is marked "inside" in capital letters underneath the make of the tyre, as well "outside" on the outer.

She phoned our local tyre fitting centre and was told it was not a problem, just a school boy error and that she had been in no danger.

However, this is not what the MOT garage had told her, they said it was dangeous, and even more so when wet. Obviously the tyre would wear differently to the others, but why would she be told two different things by two independant garages.

On phoning the tyre fitting centre's customer services, they did not want to help either on this matter.

(edited to remove name and shame)

Depends what you want out of the situation - live and learn and don't use them again?

Get it changed asap - the tread pattern is designed to work the way the tyre is marked.
Personally I would be going back to whoever put the tyre on!

support the local garages! the chain gharages are often putting up prices and the quality could sometimes be really bad.

If it's a directional tyre, and most are these days, then I wouldn't want to be driving at motorway speeds in the wet. Basically the tyre would be channeling water in to the centre of the tyre, rather than outwards, vastly increasing the chance of aquaplaning.

Basically, don't use **** ***.

Because one garage is responsible for the cock up & is playing it down to minimise the hassle.

Was it one of those asymmetric tyre jobbies?
They have an inside, outside AND direction of travel.

I've had this on my old car, they put it right straight-away and as far as I'm aware the guy that did it had made a few similar cock-ups and is now gone.

Still use them as the owner is a family friend.

Really? So if you order 4 tyres, you actually have to get 2 pairs, since the ones that go on the nearside, are different to the ones that go on the offside?
Yes

Yes
Who makes these?
Good example is Pirelli P-Zero Corsa - I have run them on my track car as road tyres (with occasional track usage)

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=P...

Tyres come marked up with either Left or Right have inside and outside clearly marked on the tyre

I have had this happen more than once.

The first time it was immediately noticable, the car felt very strange and changed it back the next day.

Most recently I was surprised how little effect it had on the car, it was a powerfull fwd car with one front (directional) tyre the wrong way round, but it made very little difference to it and I did a few hundred miles before i noticed. It was my own fault for putting it on the wrong side after a track day, er, so had no one to blame except myself!

Which ones do you have? A quick google shows they make an asymmetric model, and a directional model?
If you are directing that question towards me - I've added a link and some pictures

I would add that as a road tyre they aren't very good in the wet (on track in the wet they aren't bad just not good on the road)

Cheers, never seen them before. Learn something every day.
I managed to get 2 short sprints a wet track day in France and 3000 miles out of a set before I finished them off completely on a full track day as they are quite a soft compound wink

In car video from track day in France earlier this year
