No I dont own an oil well but I have decided to change my Porsche Boxster S 6 speed manual great car but after 4 years I am bored with the Germanic efficiency and performance whilst good no longer sets me tingling.
So its the Italians for me next.
I have done 6 series BMW's, done XJ's and MBenz even the Cosworth and Brabus variants.
So I say what other choice do I have with a £40k budget?

355 unless you have to have a V12.

I'm guessing it needs to be a 2+2?

Edit - Just seen you traded in a Boxster, so yeah, 355 or 360. Perhaps a V8V or Gransport too.

If it is just a straight choice between the two then the 550 is definitely the way forward. It's an epic drive and there is a tweak you can do to the front geo which makes them handle even better than before. Personally I'd go for one with a tubi or similar exhaust fitted as it really makes a huge difference to the standard, rather subdued soundtrack. Grigio with bordeaux for me please!

...isnt the 550 a 2 seater though? I had a look at one and noticed there seemed to be a lot of wasted space between the boot and front seats. The fuel tank cant be that big...

456 is a hell of a lot prettier than the 550.

They look a tad slab sided and numb from the front to me. (I know I know) But I wouldn't say no though....

The 550 looks like a shark compared to the dolphinesk 456

355 has to be , i know you fancy a 550 / 456 , i would have the 550.

Im sure the 456 had a huge price tag when new and now you can pick them up for around 28k.

shuffles off to have a looky at Maserati quattrapporte prices.

Neither car has aged well at all imo, they're both not exactly lookers. Go with a 355 imo, gorgeous car!

If the 456 is a manual M, the driving experience and many of the parts are the same. At one time I considered running a 550 alongside the 456 but they were too similar for that to make sense and bought a 360 instead. I would classify both 550 and 456 as GT cars.

Coming from a Boxster, the easier bridge is into a V8 screamer. With your budget I would buy a 360 and invest a bit in getting it handling properly and sounding right (ie suspension mods and a Tubi). More than enough drama right there. For me, the 355 feels slow. It isn't but it feels like it is, mainly because you have to rev the tits off it to get anywhere.

DB9
Yep, I'd agree with that. For £40k your choice is 550M or DB9. I've got one of each. They are very different cars.

The DB9 you could live with every day. Easy to drive, well built so it rarely breaks, and cheap to service. In the last 2-3 years DB9 prices seem to have bottomed out at around £40k, so whether there will be further depreciation, I'm not sure. If there is it won't be much. The 9 is far, far better than the DB7, V12 versions of which still seem to be selling for £30k+

A 550 is more of a weekend car. It needs much more commitment to drive, and also to own. It will cost you on average £5k per year in maintenance (I'd say the DB9 would be less than £2k), but is so much more tactile than the DB9. You drive it and feel it would be a blast on track - a bit like a huge Elise - which is a feeling the DB9 never gives you. I suspect a well maintained 550 will not depreciate - they made far fewer of them than the DB9 and if not already I've no doubt it will be a future classic.

In it's favour, the DB9 looks better and sounds better. It also attracts more attention - whether you want that or not is up to you.

If you're curious come up to Scotland and I'll hire them out to you!

550 for me, sharper steer and very quick. I also think 5k per year running costs sounds excessive unless your mileage is huge, although they do have a tendency to throw a few eye wateringly expensive faults from time to time.

I don't agree with the notion that they haven't aged well, granted they don't look modern, but they're looking increasingly 'classic' to me, and still pretty.
