As above I have been offered a 1.8 120 with 74000 miles. I only ask as im after a fun cheap runaround while I take my supra off the road to cure some problems but also to keep as a daily drive so would it be worth it?

Also any other cars recommended would be appreciated my budget is 1500 pounds.

MG John and 300bhp/ton are the chaps with experience on these.

Have you considered something Jap? My Prelude 2.2VTI was in your price range, also what about an Impreza 2000 turbo, they are Cheap now in fact my friend just picked up a really nice one for £1800.Of course if fuel economy is an issue ignore my Impreza option;)

It's a nice handling little thing, more in the old school of hot hatches than the modern "sanitised" kind. Not particularly fast, especially in 120 guise, but great fun to throw around.

Build quality is... variable. That's to say that 70% are rubbish and 30% are fine. The engine suffers from the usual I4 K-series head gasket woes but that's fairly cheap to fix and can be fixed properly (so it's far less likely to go again) if you get someone who knows what they're doing to do the work.

I've bought a ZR diesel to use as a daily and throw my mountain bike into and they are a fun little car for little money. Had a bit of a tinker so it's now producing 158bhp and 250lb/ft so it's reasonably quick. Of course people will knock them but who gives a st what they think?

Pretty old design, and surprisingly expensive to insure thanks to their owner profile (My ZT costs less to insure than any ZS or ZR!)

Of course it's up to you if the price is right...

Don't let HGF put you off - it's not the end of the world if it does happen, and it's nice to know that the car has one main problem you fully understand rather an multitude of issues you have no idea how to fix.

Handling is great, they're a fun car to drive.

But...

They're stuck together with spit and newspaper. The image of them these days is pretty low but who gives a st about that, get an unmolested one and get handy with some self-repairs and you'll have a fun car that you'll love and hate simultaneously.

I hated mine but when it wasn't pissing me about it never failed to put a smile on my face. When all is said and done, you're on Pistonheads because driving makes you smile, the ZR will do that but let's make it our dirty little secret.

I have a zr 160 Express van it was an official model, beat the c-ap out of it every day. In 6 months and 14000 miles nothing has broken or fallen off. I find it very entertaining.
Its all a bit low rent but so is the purchase price

Depends on the year and condition for £1500 IMO.

As a car I think they are fine. Roomy but small and quite a good drive although not the last word in hot hatch handling by a long shot. But way more fun than most.

Sadly some claim build quality suffered on latter examples. I've not personally witnessed this and my brothers ZS certainly was no problem.

For £1500 I'd probably keep an eye out for a Rover 200 BRM. Lovely comfy custom leather interior and with the VVC engine. But more importantly a front LSD and a close ratio gearbox.

i have 2005 zr 105 and go between at the min.

its fking brilliant and fking rubbish at the same time.

great fun to drive, even though its comically slow. but i think its made from paper mache and rattles like a good un.

reminds me very much my old 205 gti.

bear in mind if you buy it, you will NEVER sell it.

not because you want to keep it, but because nobody will take it off you frown

i cant even get £2500 for mine, its only 5 year old with 50k on it!
