What diesel car?? Need Advice
Discussion
330d/335d/530d/535d....any of them should fit the bill. Ah no they won't you need 5 doors.
Hmmmm......Any audi/bmw/merc estate with a 3.0 TDI..should be fairly nippy can't really think of anything else more interesting.
Budget wise I would imagine you could pick them up from 10k to well over 50k depending on age, spec and mileage.

Moving to the dark side!
I have just been through the same dilemma as you - I ended up moving from a Volvo S40 T4 to a more economical motor: Volvo S60 D5 (euro III) as I was doing a lot of miles and had to move to a diseasel and cut down on the amount of cash I was supplying Shell with.
You'll suffer a slight drop in performance although this is made up by the bucket load of torque and these motors (especially the post 2005 euro IV engines) are very remap-able. All whilst achieving 40-55 MPG based on driving style, 500 - 700+ miles per tank according to the oil burners over at T5D5. You will struggle to get better than that!
Tough to go into more detail without an idea of budget!

I have recently bought a S60 D5 Euro3 aswell...loving it

saw the pics of your car on T5 forum..very nice

So the other thread hasn't scared you yet , it appears that an injector costs 1k a poop and all 4/5/6 can go in the same time . Have you ever thought about a small turbo unit , they are better than a poxy diesel . Why would you ever want 260 torque ?
Do I need to remind you that apparantley you have to do 60000 miles to recoup the extra thousand pound you spent on a diesel engine instead of a petrol

I wondered how long it would be before that old chestnut got wheeled out

I agree IF we are talking BRAND NEW cars...but the way people buy used cars is slightly different

Or have you ever actually thought??
Totally different cars and abilities. Npt too mention these modern FI and compound boost petrol engines are just as complex and costly to maintain and repair.

Even more
Why would you not want torque???
HP = torque x rpm/5252
The more torque the more HP.

cobblers!Have you ever considered that a used diesel is worth more than a used petrol?

Not too mention distance vs cost is dictated by mpg, which depending on model can be quite different.
And monthly running costs are often more important than a bottom line figure. The additional cost of buying a diesel can make no or little difference on a monthly basis.

I have to say although the least PH car in the entire Universe, the engine in my Yaris 1.4 diesel is pretty impressive after being superchipped.
Ok 118bhp /180lb ft is nothing to scare the mighty BMW d's who stalk the earth gobbling up Veyrons, but it still manages huge milages on the fuel. Driven gently last two tanks were 63 and 65. Driven faster it was 58. Even crusing at 90-110mph it will do nearly 50. Where permitted of course.
I actually think smaller cars are more suited to diesels pulling power. Compare my car to a petrol car like the Suzuki Swift 1.2; the Yaris has better in gear acceleration by far and is more fuel efficient. If you can keep awake behind the wheel of course
With bigger cars I'd prefer a V8, if you are going to spend that amount then the extra cost becomes less of an issue and also the V8 soudns an awful lot better.

I currently have Audi S5, gotta sell it due to cost of running it, also, now expecting so need extra money and 5 doors! Looking for good diesel car, would ideally like a quick one. ANY IDEAS??
How about a Jaguar X-Type 2.0 or 2.2d. Comfy, nice interior, always rated as a better steer and drive than comparable Audi's. Estate or saloon. Good mpg and a £300-400 remap make them go rather well too.zakelwe said:

The problem with smaller diesel cars is that they are usually less well soundproofed, so you are more exposed to THE HORROR. The bigger and more luxurious the car, the less it matters 'cos you can't hear it anyway.otolith said:

30-50mph in 3rd/4th 7.2 / 10.3 (autocar)
Superchipped Yaris hoover.
30-50mph in 3rd/4th 4.0 / 6.1
That's a big difference quicker in 4th than the SWIFT in 3rd. Jeez, I'm starting to sound like What Car magazine .. arrghh ..

+1 for an S60, definitely needs a remap (RICA or MTE) for extra thrust though.
Also look atBSR
Superchips
Angeltuning
Polestar
Etc. Etc.
It made a massive differance to mine. Just have a spare intercooler standing by (I have one waiting ready to swap over when needed), once mapped it is only a matter of time before the stocker pops
