Has anyone had a problem with the electronic dipstick?

The oil level went from full to half full in a couple of days. No problem as it has done that before, so I add a half litre (as I have done before) but there was no increase in the measured level. I keep adding the other half litre bit by bit but there was still no measured difference after turning the car back on and allowing the new level to be calculated.

Eventually I tipped the last 100ml or so into the engine and the oil level calculated the there was too much bloody oil! irked Is there a way or removing a small amount of the oil easily (not too great with spanners) or is a trip to the BMW dealer to have an oil change?

Cheers,

Pete

Is this on S85? If so there is an oil level reset you can do, read below. You will deffo need to drain oil out. Do NOT drive if at all possible as the S85 and I believe the S65 is very sensitive to oil level errors both on engine internals and cats. On the S85 if it is overfilled with oil the crankshaft can "whip" the oil into a foam which the oil pumps can`t pump basically meaning a drastic drop in oil pressure with ensuing damage.

Get the instant reading by pressing BC until you get the oil level indicator, then if you have just added oil and want to see if you filled it adequately, press the BC button for at least 2 seconds. The oil level will show a clock symbol while it updates. Do this with the engine warmed and on a level surface. It may not produce an update soon enough to satisfy your curiosity, displaying only "--", but you have to trust that you added the litre and not be tempted to add more.

Just read again:
Remove the large black plastic shield under the bumper, 4 nuts and about a dozen screws.
Remove the drain plug in the cover of the the inverted oil filter housing, which will release about 1/2 liter of oil.
If needed, run the engine (with the drain plug installed) to refill the oil filter housing. Drain again.
If your car is showing +1.5 liter (which is the maximum reading), you could drain the housing 3 times. The new oil level might not be displayed for several days.

Don't ever refill it until it gets to the low indicator. Then pour in 1 litre. In the meantime, do the reset as indicated above.

Thanks for the responses.

It's an E92 M3 but unsure of the engine designation. The little clock is replaced by '>MAX'. I have let the level drop to the minimum before but felt guilty that I was not looking after the car (possibly a little silly). It's the third time I have topped up the oil when the oil level was half way and I have never before had a problem. I'll run the car to the dealer in the next week or so and get the oil changed. Bugger.

I can't say I've had any problems per say but I do feel its not as accurate as it thinks it is. I've added oil twice now, as has been suggested above when it got to the +1L symbol, but I only added half a litre on both occasions to find it took it to just below the max reading! Under the advice of my Dad (I think) its always better to err on the side of caution because its much more difficult to remove it!!!!!!!

Personally I am glad its a sensitive little soul because I like to look after it smile

It takes some getting use to, less is more on the top-ups.

I suffered the same fate early into ownership.
