Hi guys,

I am buying a house in Scotland next year and keep saying to my wife I want a garage. She say (she is from Scotland) that the majority of people park their cars in the driveway and use their garage for storage or they convert it to living space. She says it is really quite common.

My question is if you have a really nice car BMW/MB etc does parking it in the elements really bad for it? Does the snow damage the paintwork? The door rubbers perish quicker because of the cold etc?

Hear from you soon!

Pretty sure this is normal everywhere. I'm the only person in my road who puts a car in the garage.

Obviously if you can afford the space, you should keep it in the garage. However, in reality we all known most garages these days are tiny and only good for storing household fluff.

nah, it quite liked sitting in the snow, but was a bugger to get off the drive! gave up in the end and took the Defender to play out instead

My driveway is on an incline,
very scary last year when I parked it looked back and started to slide towards the metal gate, luckily the gate was open and it missed the posts by an inch, also stopped short of the road!

Interesting reply mate! Do you have a ongoing insurance claim or something? I am definitely in Australia mate and not an investigator so don't worry smile

Your car will deteriorate faster if kept outdoors, in summer as well as winter. However, if you are only planning to keep a car for a year or so then it's less of an issue as most other cars of the same age will also be kept outside.

Leave the everyday car out to the elements. Put the sports car in the garage.

If you can get a house with a garage then do.
