I like to think I know what I'm talking about when it comes to cars (especially VWs), but I know the square root of sod all about (LR) garage pricing. A friend has just sent me the following details about his '02 reg Defender TD5:

"Garage reckon the front brake callipers have seized, so the pads can not be changed and I therefore need new callipers. The garage tell me it is £846 to replace them. Also the steering box is supposedly knackered and will also need to be replaced. They are on the internet for £300, but from the garage reckon about £800-plus..."

These main-dealer prices seem hugely excessive!

a) What kind of price should he pay a garage to do the above work (if it does, in fact, need doing)?
b) Anyone recommend a decent indy near Clapham?

I wait for the full PH knowledge to be brought to bear!! Many thanks in advance.

Steering box's do become notchy or start leaking, dont bother with recon units or trying to replace seals.
Original fitment was Adwest and you can buy a new Adwest TD5 box for around £300 + Vat, and allow 4 hrs to fit [more likely 2 is sufficent] at £40 an hour [indi rate] = £460+vat

Brakes...2 calipers=£200 Pads £25 Discs £60 Misc £25 + 4 hrs@£40 = £450+vat.

Thats what an independent would charge 'up north'

Call Graham Goodyerup in Coleshill. He is an extremely good guy to know. Easy to get to from London but no London pricing to be seen.

Met Line out to Amersham and they'll pick you up.
