General phone moan & time travel
Discussion
I am 44,
When my Grandfather was alive, if he needed to go to the bank, he would probably walk to the local branch, and local would be in walking distance. Likewise with all other local services.
In my Fathers day, he would telephone the bank, or other services. Speak to someone a couple of miles away who he probably knew by name.
Now.. in the last week, I have time travelled back 70 years, but without the convenience.
1) Autoglass...Had a windscreen replaced on my Jag, good job..but had a problem with the Auto-wipers. Couldn't contact my local branch, only the central number..useless. Just easier to drive to the branch, 8 miles. Sorted in 10 minutes, very happy.
2) Paris Motor Show..lovely, had my Easyjet ticket booked, day trip from Luton...my local airport, £40 rtn booked ages ago, top day out. Didn't bank on the French strike, so rtn flight cancelled, but outbound still valid...not sure of refund policy. Spent 30 minutes on 'premium phone'.. no joy. Drove to Luton Airport,12 miles went to desk sorted.
3) Barclays bank...used to be one in the village..gone, now a hairdresser. Needed to withdraw over £2k for builders...they only seem to take cash, not one of them had a chip and pin machine with them !. Tried to call local branch (5 miles away)...10 minutes talking to the world, but no result. Got in the car, drove there...ah sorry Sir, you need to order in advance for that figure (!), we can have it for you in the morning.
So is it just me, and my Grumpy Old Man status, as it is easier to drive and see the people face to face, making the phone redundant....or is the telephonic world turning to Sh**t. Any of you young IT gurus willing to defend your posts ?
