"Good" and "Bad" music

I was having this discussion with a friend of mine, who was being extraordinarily difficult because he'd started off by insulting a track I liked.
It seems to me that most sensible people can agree on what is "good" music and what is "bad music". Take Girls Aloud; I expect 99% of the people on this forum will agree with me when I say their music is "bad". Some people might like their music, but they would still agree it's bad - there's very little talent, it's very generic and it's manufactured in a way music never should be. Compare that to Bonobo; I would think most people would agree his music is "good", even if they don't like it. He's clearly got a lot of talent and carefully creates his tracks.
I admit to liking plenty of "bad" music: for some reason I like a particular type of 1990s' dance music that is obviously twaddle. It's like a guilty secret. But I would never try and claim that music is any good.
Do you agree? And can we come up with some way of determining which is which, other than listening to all the tracks in the world?

Good music to me is something I like to listen to. If someone else doesn't like it, it still doesn't change my opinion that it is good.
Entirely subjective and no one can tell me what is good or bad music in terms of style. If someone else thinks that my taste in music is bad then I would suggest they are blinkered and need to realise that it is their subjective opinion that the music is bad and this is not to be mistaken for fact.

Foo Fighters in my opinion are the best, most talented band in the last 20 years, and Dave Grohl is amazing at everything he does musically, even if he is slightly mad.
Cheryl Cole is very pretty with an average voice and god awful at writing songs (if she does write them) Manufactured crap will never find itself in my collection. The Spice Girls were crap singers, their image made them their millions not their talent, and that's not what music is about.

I don't agree.
I like rock and heavy metal, particularly the 80's vintage. To me, this is "good" music. Pretty much all current chart music is "bad" music IMO, particularly anything in the R'n'B genre.
The majority of teenagers and young adults would think the exact opposite, but that doesn't make anybody wrong.

Girls Aloud is actually very good of its kind. Well made, well produced pop. Just because it's a genre you don't like, doesn't mean it's "bad" music, except to you. good music is challenging and interesting to listen to, and rewards repeated listening.
my instinctive reaction is to say that I hate music like girls aloud, but actually I do enjoy listening to their singles (when on the radio) and appreciating how they are constructed, produced, etc.

Too me "good" music would be music that someone or a band has worked hard at to create, writing their own stuff etc to eventually get where they want to be weather that’s just doing the local gig circuit or chart topping success with their own sound and style bringing something new to a existing genre.
"Bad" music imo is all this manufactured x factor type stuff or bands that have been created by a label where random people have been selected on their looks or their potential to move singles. Not to say that this type of music makes my ears bleed but I wouldn’t rush out and buy any of it.
I like a huge variation of music, I would like to think I could give almost anyone my ipod and there wouldn’t be something on there they didn’t like.

Girls Aloud's song Biology is a classic, it's a very high quality pop song. I hate their sort of music as a rule but that tune is the exception.
The video is even better. Not in a leery "aren't they nice to look at?" kind of way, but in terms of direction and coreography. It really is great pop music, much better than a lot of the other stuff that somehow seems to get in the charts. A lot of their album stuff is filler though.
It kinda pisses me off that people automatically call a song 'st' or 'bad' just because it's not to their particular taste. Happens to regularly these days.
I choose to listen to the things that I appreciate and like the sound of. If I don't like it, I steer clear from it. But I wouldn't turn round to someone that did like it and tell them that it's crap or that they shouldn't be listening to it.
Some people's heaven might be someone else's hell. I like 90's Trance and am also still a big Level42 fan, but that doesn't mean I think everyone else should appreciate them. You may not think Girls Aloud have any talent, but their manufactured style is popular with the right people, something that the producers and managers get very right with bands like them.

I think the main reason girls aloud etc. is popular is because its what people are told is popular on the radio in the day time. People would find more music they liked if they searched it out and found something that connected with them. The reality, I think, is that most people just aren't that interested in music and therefore listen to what they are fed. (if you see what i mean).
I have broad listening tastes and accept that my kids hate a lot of what I listen to.
I broadly accept the point about genre critisism but I think we can all agree that rap and hip-hop is talentless, tuneless ste of the first order, can we not?
The big off button comes into place in the unfortunate event that some slips through my filters. Although I accept, contrary to my own stated position, that that M&M chappies has done some records that buck the trend.
