The Cross And The Snake: Alfas By Avatar Man

Alfa commissions artist Federico Alliney for seven-piece series

Alfa Romeo has commissioned artist Federico B Alliney to create a collection of seven pieces of art featuring classic Alfa Romeos.

If you don't know Alliney, he is apparently the chap behind the look of the big blue creatures of Avatar - though fortunately his Alfa pieces aren't blue.

Anyway, the result of the collaboration of Alfa and Alliney is the 'Cross and the Snake' collection, which features classic Alfas (such as the BAT 9, the Disco Volante and the Carabo concept) against various odd backgrounds, including an abandoned greenhouse, a petrol station, and - er - a jungle.

Each of the pieces will be reproduced just 30 times, so if you want to get hold of one, you'd better move quickly. And if you want to know why Alliney is particularly intrigued by Alfas, then the man himself can explain.

"It's as if these cars are linked to our inner self and to the essence of the earth," he says. "I have never been able to explain this rationally and from there my research continues, but these mechanical sculptures transcend the simple notion of movement, they are something vital transmitting emotions and attracts us to them." Oh. Good. Thanks Federico.

He also says that "choosing an Alfa is a choice of faith, not merely a choice between one car or another". You're not wrong there, Federico...

The BAT9 & Batman one is truly cringe-worthy. He should stick to making big blue aliens.

hehe

I think they are prints aren't they?
They're stunning anyway. I love the cloverleaf in front of the Alfetta, and the Disco Volante and seaplane.
cool

Looks like it actually! Perhaps the cheeky git got paid to do 3d models but just stole all the images to save time?! Really like the alfetta one though...

Wow. These look absolutely vile. I am massively dissapointed. No soul or life in the pictures, no smell of warm oil or burnt rubber. Just as if they were idiotic 3D-render... Oh, wait.

Rubbish.

I hope the next generation games consoles can render images like this!

I love the green concept and the red one with the plane! Very auto-emotive and probably the best use of an Alfa (ie: as art, rather than as a means of transportation).

are those the actual pictures then or just mock-ups? They look like not very good photoshops.

The perspective is broken in most of them making the cars look like they don't sit in their environment correctly.

When you say commissioned, I hope you don't mean they paid him for this sh*t!

I'm no Michael Angelo, but I reckon even I could do better in a afternoon.

Want to send them my phone number? I have a week off next week and everything!

The pictures have no artistic merit, unlike the cars involved. Isn't there an 8C on display in one of NYs major art museums? I wouldn't display these in my downstairs toilet.

As for this quote;

"...choosing an Alfa is a choice of faith, not merely a choice between one car or another".

I'm sure all Alfa owners had a little chuckle at that. Personally, for me, it's more a leap of faith rather than choice.

They're a bit Hollywood Diner aren't they? I half expected to see them with little light bulbs where the headlights should be.

That said, the Carabo concept looks stunning wherever they put it. Pity he put an Iguana in front of it, or it'd be almost acceptable. Iguanas just smack of 1980s drug-dealer's pets to me.

Federico's comments are more artistic than his prints. He should be a writer.
