My girlfriend is being given a car by her mum at the weekend. '99 1.6 Golf Auto, so nothing special or expensive. She's been driving for 10 years but not for the last 3, so has no NCD and we have a central London postcode. Best quote I can get from the many comparison websites is £940 TPFT.

Does anyone have experience of similar cirumstances and can advise of companies or brokers who they think can do significantlty better than this?

I can get it down to £750 with a multicar quote from my insurers Admiral put it raises a whole host of issues with regards to my current contract length, future change of cars etc.

That's with me as a named driver. Putting her mum on also seems a bit pointless as she lives 50miles away.

I doubt your gf is going to get any quotes significantly better than the ones quoted. 0 NCB coupled with a London postcode is a recipe for disaster when hoping for a decent car insurance quote. Suck it up mate.

Even if she dosn't drive the car it may reduce the price.

you are missing the point of putting someone on as a named driver.

just put the mum on. then try taking yourself off. You will find it goes down.
Limit the mileage to 5000 or 8000. remember this is how much the main driver will drive in a year, not how much the car will do! wink

I leave my dad on my car as a named driver as someone nearly 60 with a clean licence and no accidents brings the cost down a bit.

FWIW that quote doesn't sound too bad, especially if it's for being parked on the street. I pay 800ish for a boring car in N4, street parking, I have 5 years NCB but 3 points.

Worth considering streetcar as an alternative if it's only occasional use. Just the insurance cost alone would pay for 3 hours a week use of a Golf - factor in fuel, tax, servicing, MOT, parking permits, breakdown cover, etc and it would be more.

Try getting a few comprehensive quotes.

I find Fully comp is cheaper than TPFT :S

On a serious note, it will help putting her mum on. It won't look dodgy either as it was her car previously. Try it!

Can everyone please post details of their mum/nan/aunt so that I can add them all as named drivers and get the insurance down to less than £100 wink

Haha, well that would be bent... but sticking her mum on the policy is hardly that bad seen as though it was her car before... and they're sharing it aren't they wink

Infact, any pics of her mum?

OK, if I add her mum as well as myself to a policy, it comes down £200. If I add her mum instead of me, it comes down only £100.

If I add her mum to the multicar quote, it goes UP £400!!

Go figure....
