OP, measure the resistance between the two terminals of the screen and Google/ask BMW/compare with another car if that is an expected result. You say the tracks are OK but is that from a visual check or measurement?
It's unlikely to be a problem with the feed to/from the screen.

Do the resistance check as mentioned earlier.
Also check all the connections to the screen and point of supply for cleanliness & security.
If that fails to yield a result, check the voltage at the point of connection on the rear screen, and then at the point of protection ie. fuse carrier, if there is a noticeable difference between the two then you have a voltage drop somewhere between the two providing nothing else is connected in series between the two but I can't see it.

Matthew

Could be purely down to the battery on the car getting a little weak, assuming it is still original, and therefore 5 years old.
Outside temps would have caused the glowplugs to be on for longer causing battery to 'drain' more and charging system not quick enough to regenerate the battery so rear screen heater was slow to clear, especailly if lots of other electrics were being used at the same time, lights, heated seats etc.
Probably worth getting the battery and charging system checked whilst under full load.
