I am new to this so firstly Hi to everyone. I would like any advice that anyone has about purchasing and owning a 2005/2006 M5. I have researched a bit on the subject and understand I need to buy a later 2005 model, to avoid some of the early problems, is this correct. And also I have heard the extended BMW warranty is a must, but can you get it on an older car? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Not sure that the warranty issue is so much of a problem anymore - you can now take BMW's own insured warranty out on a car over 3 years old.

Yeah i have just done a quote online for a comprehensive warranty with emergency service, it was about £900. I have read lots of horror stories about clutch and gearbox problems with the M5.

Don`t believe everything you read on the internet, the SMG on the M5 has become the same story as the VANOS on the e36 and e46. Internet scaremongering. It isn`t helped, funnily enough, by BMW dealers themselves. They are able to claim 75% of labour on warranty work.

I wouldnt buy without a BWM warranty. I ran mine for 2 years and had about 3.5k of work done on it by BMW - all at no cost to me smile

Is the Warranty different for the saloon? You guys are getting £89/month quotes with zero excess on a saloon. Im getting £105/month for the same thing on a tourer. Is this right?

£104 per month with NO emergency service and £0 excess.

£100 per month with emergency service and £100 excess.

£113 per month with emergency service and £0 excess.
