Its free for the first 3 years. Then you have to pay. The BMW website is a little coy about the cost. I looked into it when I got my 330D a little over a year ago. I seem to think its around £50 or £60 per year?
If you google "BMW assist" the first result takes you to the information. I've never used it. I have the 'SOS' button in my car but I've never dared push it! Probably wouldn't work anyway without the account being set-up. As far as I know the car does not have a built-in GPRS/mobile-comms SIMM. So it may use my personal phone via bluetooth to make the 999 call. Hence not daring to try it.
I believe with the system active you can send Sat Nav destinations to your car via Google Maps. When I investigated I thought this was the most useful feature. I concluded that it was not worth it for my requirements - just commuting to one place or work with occasional trips. But, if I were 'on the road' for a living it would be worth having in my view. The ability to phone and speak to a person to get general information is pretty neat too. And they can also send destinations to your sat nav system.

I have mine set up - it cost nothing.
There is a dedicated SIM in the car and you can beam locations into the SatNav from Google maps - it's pretty cool.
You can also just call the BMWAssist agent who can be generally helpful - they can tell where you are and send directions to a location of you are lost, help with breakdowns, etc.
They may be able to access the service data, not sure.
I selected the option to call them by accident once and a very helpful lady told me all about the system and what they can do. She was probably sat in the call centre very bored.
