Is Bugatti now making a profit with the Veyron?
Discussion
I'd imagine there's a fair bit of profit on each marginal car - but taking into account R&D, they're probably still at a nett loss.
But if you looked at how the technical innovations have filtered down (just guessing) into the mainstream VW products, it may have still been worthwhile.

I think they built it instead of going racing, so the development costs are viewed almost as a marketing expense. If they wrote off the development costs at the start of the build phase they may currently be running a profit, but as a project I'd be suprised if the ink at the bottom of the page is anything other than red.

I think that might have been a publicity stunt by Bugatti.
How could they not make a profit when they used VW Passat switchgear?
According to some of the Bentley Continental GT ads that I've seen, for cars specced very much for the tastes of "sports people", the Bugatti engine was little more than a cobbled together evolution of their engine ..... Hardly seems work £1000000 when you can get 2/3 the car for less than £40000How could they not make a profit when they used VW Passat switchgear?

I've always thought the same. But if you looked at how the technical innovations have filtered down (just guessing) into the mainstream VW products, it may have still been worthwhile.
