Just got a new job, so looking for a cheap car. Ideally under £1500 for now and something that a youngster (of 19) can get insured on reasonably well. Also, recommendations of insurers that target this market.
Has to be able to make a good 150 mile commute weekly as well. Petrol or Diesel, not fussed on the shape. More fun the better as well.
Thanks..

Saxo's are 10 a penny, nice VTR's are £1500 or less. Apart from a dodgy gearbox they are reasonably good, fun and do 35-40 mpg most of the time. Golf TDI's are pretty solid, the 90hp is ok performance wise and will do plenty to the gallon. Chuck some 18's on and your away as an alternative.

150 miles a week is not really all that much tbh.Has to be able to make a good 150 mile commute weekly as well. Petrol or Diesel, not fussed on the shape. More fun the better as well.

Lots of decent cars out there. If insurance is an issue then classics and kit cars are certainly the cheapest in this regard.
And at 19 why be practical, I say look for a sports or saloon car or a kit and have some fun. Such cars are usually easy to maintain and fix and no less reliable than a 10 year old hatchback.
This is potentially a rather rapid car and a lot of fun too:
R7 with 16v Dolly Sprint engine (1980)
£1,695

1997 Quantum 2+2 (1997)
55,000 miles £1,800

Triumph 2000 or a Dolly would be a good bet too. Morris Minor, Mini, Spitfire even a Series III Landy.

Nasty experience with Adrian flux - I know I wouldn't!
Chris Knot is the best value for money by far for me, would depend on the usual variables though.
