Schools Kids Sports Funding Cancelled
Discussion
As a result of spending review yesterday, the funding for promoting sports in ALL schools nationally has been stopped, from next year the funding will go direct to the schools instead of a dedicated area team, what are the chances headmasters will actually use the money for sports when they are already struggling for cash.
Bet we would not have been awarded the Olympics if this had been known in advance. Seems crazy knowing that our kids are becoming more and more unfit due to poor diets etc etc, so the sensible thing to do is stop a programme that has a proven track record of getting kids back into sport and healthy lifestyles.
May as well take the money saved and wait at Dover or Heathrow to hand it over to anyone that gets off the boat or Plane

A lot of extra curricula stuff is actually provided by ward funds which pay private companies to provide sports of all varieties.
If schools are told they have to provide 1/2 hour sport a day, then so they should.
There is still the local councils that provide this as well, this will remain.
Maybe it's time for parents to take some responsibility then. I remember as a kid being forced to go to karate, footie and cricket practice outside of school. Wasn't much of a sporting enthusiast at that age but thankful of it now.
Sure these things cost but families could always sacrifice their sky tv and latest games console in exchange. I know I didn't have any of the aforementioned whilst growing up.
This is one aspect where Dave's 'big society' may just work.

Schools Kids Sports Funding Cancelled

What is wrong with Parents paying for their own sports, or doing something themselves?

The money hasn't been cancelled then, just paid through a different channel.

Why not do some parenting rather than leave it to someone else?Bet we would not have been awarded the Olympics if this had been known in advance. the funding for promoting sports
So these preposterous labour lackey extra public sector staff go, and the schools carry on teaching sports as normal. Wow, there's a shock. I'm outraged. Simon Brooks said:

If parents can't be arsed to go and play or promote sports to their kids then tough, the schools I have spoken to are certain they can improve the quality of their offer to children with the removal of ringfenced money. Some of that may be through improved sports, but whatever happens the removal of central control of budgets is a good thing. Unfortunately sport in schools has changed dramatically since I guess a large section PHers where on the recieving end of the education system.
In principle I agree with most of the comments posted, however PE teachers that can kick a ball only addresses the kids that are actually interested in sport. The whole point of the School Sports Partnership programme was to engage those kids that are not able to access at least 2 hours of sport per week either because of constraints in thier own schools or because a lack of support at home.
Surely we as a group of adults can recognise that we have a duty of care that ensures that we offer a level of accessable sporting opportunities that reflects what we were afforded in our younger years.
Many of you may have watched the recent Jamie Oliver programme that looked at the decline in life expectancy of children in the USA due to poor eating and healthy lifestyle choices. As a nation we are not that far behind the USA where our children will shortly have a shorter life expectancy then their parents.
I know all the arguments that it is the parents responsibility etc etc, the cold fact is that this is just not happening in many instances.
It may interest you to know that a school I have worked with this year has had it highest level of non swimmers in its new year 7 intake ever, swimming is a basic survival skill that most of us would have taken for granted not so many years ago. The reduction of funding for such a simple life skill can only have a negative effect.
Sorry guys, I know I sound like a Guardian reading leftie, I am in fact so far right and always have been. It just amazes me that one of only a few programmes our red friends implemented has actually worked and managed to recreate a lost and forgotten desire to compete and win (yes that does go against normal leftie ideas)
My point about the Olympic was not one of whether we should or should not host the event, it was just about the logic behind having decided (rightly or wrongly to host) and then scapping a programme that then sends the message that we dont care about sports for kids in the future.
Simply look at most of the new batch of sports top achievers, most of them will have come from countries that put a huge amount of time/effort and money in the school age children.
Sport is not just about getting kids fit and healthy it is about creating an environment of social interaction and life skills for everyone not just the sporting elite.
The point made about councils running events is a great example of the other sporting options available, unfortunately most councils are going to have to reduce thier costs by 27% on average, no doubt this reduction will be targetted at easy options like sport and not quite rightly at front line services.
All we will do is force more and more kids onto street corners and thereby create bigger problems elsewhere, having worked in the juvenile prison system I can assure you that most of the kids that were our "customers" tended to not belong to any sports clubs/teams either at school or outside. This alone must give a fairly clear message that allowing kids access to various sporting opportunities is a good thing.
I am not from a sports education background, I worked in the private sector for most of my adult life, but since working in a school I can honestly say the decision will have a profound long term effect on the health and fitness on todays young people.
