The bearing in the front wheel of our three-wheeler pushchair has died. The distributor don't sell just the bearings and the washer/nut combo which holds them in place, and they want a frankly criminally insane £68 plus P&P for a new one!

So, does anyone know where I might be able to get a sensibly priced alternative? It's a quick release wheel with 10.5" tyres and the forks are 98mm across.

I don't care what it looks like, so long as it fits and will reach me for significantly less than £70!

Anyone got any thoughts?

What are the bearings? Any chance they use skateboard wheel style bearing? If so they're about £1.

ETA: A reply hehe

Surely the bearings would be easier to source? Or a wheelbarrow wheel?

There are shops which sell bearings you know? Not sure who we use but there are places the boss goes and takes any of our bearings which have "died" into and they match them with something off the shelf. They can match almost everything, or order in anything they dont have on the shelf.

Yeah. Unfortunately the bearings were loose rather than caged, and they'd all fallen out by the time my wife realised there was something wrong!

The bike shop said they could do it, but reckoned it would be a lot of trial and error to figure out what size of bearings to fit.

If anyone knows where to get hold of lots of various-sized ball bearings for pennies, that would be another option!

You wouldn't happen to know of one in Surrey would you? Sounds perfect, but we don't have one in the High Street! hehe

I think that meant have you tried a cycle shop for a wheel, not the bearings.

Surely a decent bike shop would have at least one wheel that'd fit.

They seem to be smaller than the smallest bike wheels, hence their suggestion of asking the distributor, which gave rise to the criminal quote in the first place.

BTL - Bearing Traders Limited

Measure it up, look for the manufacturer and give them a call.

I take it they view measuring the wheel/shaft as cheating then? smile

Take the other 2 wheels off, open up the bearings, pinch one or two balls from each face and put them in the front. Repack with decent grease. Or take one ball into the bike shop to get a pile of the right size.
