Hi

I've been reading review after review and I can't make my mind up between the the BMW 116d sport or Golf 1.6 match bluemotion. These are my only 2 options through my company car scheme. Test drives seem to be a real pain as the dealers don't want to know if your not buying from them or they don't have the car available. I like the gadgets and space of the Golf but looks and speed on the BMW. Any advice/recommendations much needed...

Thanks

They are both a bit rubbish, being the boggo eco models, but only one is RWD, so that would be the decider for me.

116d Sport (not M Sport) is not boggo. Sports seats and steering wheel, 17" alloys, A/C etc

I know neither of them are going to blow me away in the speed department but unfortunatly the company wants eco cars under 20k so they are the best on the list...

Don't like either really but I dislike the 1 series less so would choose that.

1 series is a decent drive and whilst this isn't the best engine, it's going to be no worse then the Golfs.

I personally really like the look of the 1 series, though many don't. I think the new Golf however looks very bland.

At least the BMW is a bit different looking, so i'd go with the 'Beemer'

Definitely the BMW. It sounds like it will be better equipped and, it's RWD...

I've not driven either, but the BMW would be the one I'd be most interested in.

Apparently you can do a sneaky remap and get 180bhp out of the 116d.... which is almost respectable

I'd be a bit cautious doing this. For some companies it's a big nono
Check the conditions before you get a bking.

But it'd still be the Bimmer for me.

I would go for the Golf, despite liking RWD better and having owned a couple BMWs in the past. The 1 series is just unpleasant to look at and the 120d I had as a loaner wasn't enjoyable to drive so didn't even have that as a redeeming factor.

Depends what you're using the car for.

FWD or RWD makes feck all difference if you're on the M1/M25 all day.

If it were my choice, as a company car used to munch miles I'd pick the one I found more comfy having been sat in it for an hour or three.

As for remapping company cars? laugh

One thing to bear in mind - we have had a Golf Match 2.0 Bluemotion on order since August.
They are now saying delivery could be March....!
Apparently leadtimes on all Golfs, Passat CCs and Tiguans are screwed up, as are most Skoda models too.

So if you are in any kind of hurry you might have to get the BMW.

If you have to choose between those two, it'll have to be walking.

Mates currently in a 118d whilst his 335d is in for some work, he's been surprised how good the car is, and he reckons it does handle quite well; unless the Golf is considerably better on fuel, the 116d is likely to be the better choice.

Not a great advert for the 335d hehe

I was stuck in a 120d m for 48 hours and it felt like i was sitting on a waterbed driving a sludge-powered blancmange.
