HMS Astute in trouble
Discussion
BBC are giving out some fact and figures... apparntly she has an impressive maximum diving depth of 500 ft... I am assuming that they have got this wrong in usual bbc style? Surely it's deeper than that?
this says 600 Metres!

How on earth do they manage this? Are we just that rubbish?
It's not like the rocks have moved since they were there last or since the charts were drawn is it?
Well last time it was a combination of chart error, high pressure training scenario, and trainee. It's not like the rocks have moved since they were there last or since the charts were drawn is it?
The thing is, you can't see where you are going underwater so navigation is actually quite tricky. You could use sonar to get a topographic fix, but going active on the sonar is a big no no as you're effectively shouting "here we are" to all and sundry, so they don't tend to use it.

IIRC there was something about the Russians trying to track Astute to get it's signature, or something?
Knowing its location, would it be possible for them to fly a plane over now and get what they were after?
It'll be their acoustic sig they're after - each boat sounds different so once they have the pattern stored it makes it easier to identify and locate. Knowing its location, would it be possible for them to fly a plane over now and get what they were after?
