In public spaces i can see the point of publicly funded art

So MOD shouldn't be buying art

Stop reading the Daily Whail....

They do it deliberately.... reality unlikely to be as black and white as they make out.

Not a fan of the MOD but if the art is likely the appreciate in value it is in fact good use of tax payers money. As long as the plan is to sell it at a fixed future value/date of course.
If not its a complete waste of our cash

And that's a valid use of the defence budget how? Seeing as we're on a DM hit; what about the £1000 typist's chairs and massive flatscreen tellys everywhere in MoD Main Building.

I worked in the Civil Service from 1993 to 1996. OUr offices in Reading were very poor. Badly decorated, very old, run down and shabby.

But what did we expect? Public Building, public money, we used what we had. ONe day, in trap two dropping the kids off at the pool, there was an almighty crash and my head was split open as all the tiles in the cubicle fell off due to damp!

They taped up trap 2, and a year later it was still U/S!

I left just as Tony came to power and the Gravy train for Civil Servants was fired up...

I visited my old "office" about 5 years ago to see some ex coleagues, they had moved premises and could not believe the kit and crap they had. Flat screens everywhere, plasmas with UGov.com ads runnning everywhere, even in the stter! Gas struts on all the monitors at the desks, videophones, balckberries everywhere, even for full time offfice staff, (ie not out and abouters!) When Iwas there, we had two office pool mobiles, that we shared, that they bought after some twit pulled a shotgun out from behind hsi sofa whilst I was visiting him and threatened to blow his head off! Oh and they have "modern art" there too, not just in public areas, or interview rooms, in the mian flipping office that is closed to the public!

Oh and if I would have stayed, my salary would have more than tripled in that time too, and I'd be earning a "London weighting too.

fking unbelievable

Good idea. The MOD buying art is exactly what we need. The art people should buy guns incase the MOD need some in the future as they have spent all their money on art. The art people could then sell guns at a profit to the MOD and the MOD could sell art at a profit to the art people and everyone makes a profit.

If art bought by government maintained its value, there would be no need for an art budget unless government was getting bigger or more artful.

Half a mil won't buy you 17 boots in the outdated, corrupt, nepotistic procurement system currently being run by failed officers and buffoons who've been put out to pasture years ago. The system is riddled with incompetance, inefficiency and blunders that'd make your eyes water.
The money is there to get good kit in a timely manner but Whitehall manage to fk the whole thing up time and time again - if the MoD was a business it wouldn't have lasted much beyond Agincourt. Half the money goes down the drain, all estimates are nothing more than a guess of what 30% of the final price may be in 10 years when whatever it is gets rolled out to a new theatre where it's not needed.
No forethought, no 'just in time' philosophy, just cigars and brandy at Annabels for the motherfkers shining their arses at the soldier's expense.
They should be fking court marshalled.

Hey, don't pull any punches! hehe

There are problems, but I don't think any of them relate to Brandy and coffinnails at a club. Most MoD MB staff wouldn't get in the frontdoor, never mind afford the bill.

Why don't they send a memo to all amateur artists who work in the MoD and showcase their work? Cost = bugger all.
