Help.

2002 M12 GTO sailed through it's MOT on everything except the fast idle emission test...which failed by 0.12%

The Lambda sensors are OK and all the normal tricks (injector cleaner in the fuel / forcing an air leak by leaving oil cap off etc) have been tried but with no luck....any other suggestions or am I looking at a new exhaust (new CATS)???

Any quick help would be greatly appreciated.

If a new exhaust is required - any suggestions on what / where / how much would be great too!

Thanks

I struggled with mine when the CATS were on their way out, ended up scraping through by getting the car real hot but not sure if this is what will work for you.

I then replaced my entire exhaust as well as cats as the Noble cats are not cheap to replace and it went a long way to getting a much better complete system.

Complete exhausts start at around 1500 for the cheapest to 3k for the most expensive, I had one made to my spec and was about 2k

When mine was stuggling one year the mot tester put a cloth over one of the exhausts and it went through. (strangly not changed anything on the car since and it has been fine since.) My brother changes the plugs to a different heat range on one of his MR2s to get it through (can't remember if it is hotter or colder though).
I'm sure somebody will be along to say why these work in a minute.

The only reason I didn't go for the H&S exhaust is they wouldn't fit flexis and that for me was a must have when going the expense for a new entire system.

I sold my exhaust recently, if the lad that bought it could message or text me that would be great as i have lost his details and have some documents to send smile

normally take the car for a good blast and get it really hot. and by good blast i mean private road good blast wink and it should pass as long as the Emissions test is the first thing they do

I don't know anything about UK emissions tests, but I would guess they measure the standard stuff - CO, CO2, NOx, HC, O2. Do you have any measurement numbers/standards? Which part failed by 0.12%? That can give an indication of what to look for to see if you have a problem.

Is this the original ECU or an upgraded MBE as when the original goes out there is nothing you can do frown

the days of the backstreet backhander seem long gone.....that said, I am now in possession of a fresh new MOT...just.

So, I now have a year to sort out a new exhaust. Interestingly the place that ultimately got it through it's MOT had another Noble in. Comparing exhausts, the CAT boxes on my exhaust were about half the size!! (probably why mine don't work too well!) and the flow on the other one looked much better - no Y piece.

Think there might be some reasonable gains to be had :-)
