Insurance query....help..
Discussion
Hello PH. I need some advice. I am currently considering buying another car, its a private sale. So this morning I contacted my insurance broker for a quote and planned to HPI check the car if the quote was reasonable before going to view it. My insurance broker came back to me with a quote, which was reasonable but then went on to advise me to 'tread very carefully' with the vehicle in question as it would appear it had some kind of history that I should be aware of. So immediately I thought written off/stolen recovered and did an HPI check, which came back completely clean. This puzzled me, so I called my broker back again and asked if he could shed any light on this, he said he couldnt for data protection reasons, but said it might not be history with the car itself but could be history relating to the owner and the police. So I called the owner, explained the situation and he was very open and honest and said the reason he is selling the car is because he cant get insured now, as his insurance company have just made his policy void as he didnt declare a drink driving offence that he had recieved 3 years ago. He says he is in the process of taking the insurance company to court as he did disclose it and it was an error at their end (but thats another story all together). So back to the point, the registration number in question now has this information attached to it in some way and it is noted that there was a void insurance policy because of failure to disclose. Baring in mind that this did not show on an HPI check, and that it seems to be held in some insurance database somewhere....should I buy this car? I am worried that it will always have some kind of dodgy past recorded somewhere and this could cause me hassle in the future if I decide to sell it on? Or will the information disappear once the car is transferred to me??
Can someone shed some light on this??
Cheers

Yeah my broker did say that it was another broker who raised this point, and that they were the broker who were involved in the case. He also said that they refused to insure the car in my name?? Why would the previous owners problems with the insurance company prevent them from re-insuring the car in someone elses name?G9
Bedford rascals post is spot on, it may be that your particular broker has made a note of the registration and when you gave it to them it brought up a note refer to manager or something like that and that info won't be shared with another insurer though so don't worry about.
I've refered policies to be voided due to unacceptable convictions but nothings attached to the car only the policyholders details.
As BR said broker should have kept mouth shut.
If you've done checks and theres nothing physically wrong with the car purchase it
