Can anyone out there advise me whether this really is as impractical as the pundits would have you believe (small fuel tank, lack of 6th gear). Should I be going for the FQ 330 with flappy paddles?
Any thoughts?

Presumably you mean the Evo X FQ-360 rather than the Evo IX FQ-360 as the latter has a 6 speed gearbox?
A lot depends on what you want to use the car for - the Evo X is more civilised than earlier versions, but it's still not that refined as a daily driver compared to say an Audi or BMW.
If you do want an Evo and are looking for a daily driver with an aggressive side that can do motorway cruiser etc then I'd go for the 330 with the SST box as by all accounts you can drive it sedately or aggressively.
If you're looking for the "Evo experience" of a balls out tamed rally car to use at the weekend etc. then I'd forget the X altogether and opt for an Evo IX MR FQ-360 (the last version of the previous shape Evo).
If you're happy modifying a car though, I'd go for an Evo IX FQ-300 as it will be cheaper and can be made better than a IX MR FQ-360 for very little money.
I'd actually say the x360 is as refined for a daily drive as something like an audi, i've got one and its nothing like the balls out rally car of previous evos, just a very fast well sorted, good handling 4 door saloon, small fuel tank is a bit of an irritant, but you get about 220 miles a tank and 22-24mpg

Hi Dave,Have you owned any Evo's prior to your X? If so, how do you rate your X compared to the previous. I find it interesting to hear peoples views as at some point I'll have to decide, X or IX to replace my VI (which I'm more then happy with for the time being)
Thanks in advance.

Dave thanks for your help.
Do you find the lack of a 6th gear on the motorway a bore. Clarkson maintains that the engine drones in 5th and fuel consumption is poor. Thoughts would be appreciated.
Many thanks
Every EVO has shocking fuel consumption. They are dreadfully inefficient beasts, but that's not the point of them is it. Either get a shell loyalty card and enjoy the huge number of shell points you'll rack up or run it as a weekend toy.Do you find the lack of a 6th gear on the motorway a bore. Hi, I had an XIII 330 which a changed for a X 360.
It was not to bad on fuel , really practical and went well, however the lack a sixth gear and it had lost a bit of the edge my XIII had left me a bit disappointed in the end, I sold that and got an R35 at the beginning of the year, am now happy again

I've driven or been in pretty much every variant and find for me I can never get to the point where I am at one with it.
Probably just me, I find them very quick but feel 90% of the reason for that is the car rather than my driving.
I found fuel consumption not too bad but small tank made it feel like I was filling up all the time.
I admit to being an impreza fan but have owned an evo6 too.
Just feel I am sitting on it rather than in it if that makes sense.
I dont find the ride or practicallity worse than an impreza other than smaller tank.
Is 5th not similar ratio to 6th between the two cars you comparing?
Personnally I like the engine and the styling and look and they are great to tune but I cant get on with driver position or lack of involvement when driving.

I agree about the lack of driver involvement in Evos having owned one for four years and driven several. However, I am also fully aware that I've never driven the car anywhere near its limit. Probably just me, I find them very quick but feel 90% of the reason for that is the car rather than my driving.

I have sat in an Evo being driven to the limit though, and not only do they defy belief in what they can do, but I would imagine the driver felt pretty involved at the time!
It's a video that has done the rounds, but it shows what Evos are capable of if the driver is skilful enough:

PS: I realise that's not a road spec Evo and it's a much earlier version than the X, but I've seen videos (which I cannot seem to find) of mildly modified road registered Evos IXs doing similar manoeuvres in skillful hands.
