I've just sold a car, rung the insurance company to cancel the policy, and been told I'm owed nearly £190 for the part of the policy I haven't used.

The only problem is I've searched high and low for the insurance certificate, and am worried the company might refuse to pay back the money unless I have it.

They've told me that I can notify them in writing that the certificate has been lost or stolen but does anyone know where I stand if I haven't got the certificate to send to them?

I'm sure it's something insurance companies probably deal with every day, but does anyone have any more advice?

I'm sure they'll send you a new certificate for the admin fee anyway (circa £20). I wouldn't start stting the bed about it just yet. smile

Cheers,
Rob

Alternatively tell the insurance company that you have misplaced the certificate - they will possibly send you a 'Lost Certificate Declaration' for you to complete and return in place of the actual certificate.

Have they asked for it back, when I cashed in my old policy for a car I just sold I had a choice to either send it back or declare it distroyed. I said I would distroy it and the money was posted in to my account. I put it though the shredder later that day.
