Whilst it will be a lot cheaper than retail , you will not get the best prices. The traders will know you are not a trade customer. Still worth it though

I have a mate that goes there and buys a lot of fish for the freezer. He reckons it's worth the effort

There are lots of butchers shops around the area - Porterford's in Bow Lane being one of note.

The trick being to go at Friday lunchtime to get the stuff being sold off cheap since they'll be shut for the weekend. wink

Happy memories.

Driving up there with my dad at 4am in a stty Citroen BX when I was primary school age, and buying loads of stuff for the restaurants, big boxes of bones etc. Used to be fascinated by the big bins full of eyeballs and tongues and stuff, and there is a wicked little cafe (When I say little I really mean it, from memory it was about the size of your average bathroom) where lots of white coated market types would congregate for bacon sandwiches and tea.

I'll have to get myself back up there again soon...

I live in Yorkshire so I'm only guessing... that you have missed a Billingsgate whoosh as it flew past

I suspect he gets his fish from Billingsgate. Smithfield is a meat market

Not allowed to "name and shame" so won't expand. But won't grace them with my meat shopping £s ever again.

Thread resurrection I know... but I'm off to Smithfields on Friday.

I'm looking for really nice beef and pork for my own consumption... any recommendations on traders?

thanks!
